Dc Vet Recommendations And Insurance

Hi Greytalk team

Can someone recommend a good vet in the D.C. , metro area?

I have not had a great experience with the vet clinic that I have been using in the Dupont area.

They have so far been unable to diagnose hookworms. They also then turned me away as an alarmist after I was worried that my girl was unwell, and that I suspect that she may have eaten some plants. They said she was just exhausted and dehydrated and gave her an IV. It actually turned out she had picked up some a random piece of plastic and luckily threw it up two days later. They are also pretty pricey and are always pushing prescription food for my girl. ( It seems to give her allergies)

I do have another vet that I trust that is 2 hours away, so in case of emergencies I couldn't make it there in time, so I am looking for an affordable reliable emergency care or minor incidents. I am considering pet insurance ( embrace) if affordable is an issue.

Thank you!

Atlas Vet on H Street. I have only heard really good things about it and Dr. Miller was Enza's vet before he went to open Atlas. He use to have a greyhound and understands the breed. If it wasn't for the parking issue there, I'd consider but I do love my vet in Alexandria so don't feel a need to switch at this time.

I think affordable is relative in the DC area. Are you comparing prices to your vet that is two hours away? I don't think you can get out of an office visit for less than $50 anywhere.

I like my vets at Ballston Animal Hospital in VA. They listen and treat me as someone involved in my dog's care rather than talking down to me. They call back when I leave a message and seem to genuinely enjoy seeing the dogs.

I saw Dr. Miller with foster dogs and he is also very good about having a dialogue with you rather than forcing something on you.

We use the same vet as Enza in Alexandria, so maybe too far. But if you ever need specialist care, I wouldn't hesitate to get a referral to the Hope Center in Vienna. We've (unfortunately) had to use their oncology, cardiology, internal medicine and emergency departments, and we've been impressed with all of them.

Thank you for the recommendations.

I will look into the Atlas Vet. I don't mind paying more, but 125 is too much for a vet visit (without treatments or medicine), and still not have an answer to what is hurting my girl.

When I lived in DC, I took my pets to Adams Morgan. The owner also had a practice in Silver Spring, where I grew up, and always took excellent care of our family pets. I never had any issues. I think he's long since retired, but I'll be happy to look him up if you'd like.

I just switched to Embrace. They are highly rated and provide the option of a wellness account (kind of like an HSA for dogs). I haven't filed a claim yet, but since I had such horrible luck with pet insurance before (ASPCA), I played 20 questions with their underwriting staff. It all seemed pretty legit.

I recommend Healthy Paws for pet insurance based on my limited experience. I'll have more to report shortly when I see how quickly they reimburse me for Violet's large vet bills. :eek

Thank you. I am always so greytful for all the support on these boards. I will look both at Healthy Paws and Embrace.

@Bootsy Collins The Adams Morgan vet sounds awesome! they are so close to me that I can walk. Let me know if you would still recommend it.

Cocomom, I just looked them up. Looks like he's still there - Dr. James Boone. We always loved him. He performed life-saving surgery on my cat, once upon a time, and he always provided excellent care for our dogs, cats, and various and sundry other animals. His son is in the practice with him. Here is the link: http://adamsmorganah.com/index.html . If you go and you meet the elder Dr. Boone, tell him the Moons sent you. He may remember my mom Patty :)
