I had not heard of this particular product, but just last night I was reading about Steve's Raw Goat Milk Yogurt. It's supposed to be packed with probiotics and other good stuff. Thinking about trying it, but will also check out Answers as well. Thanks for posting this.

When we would bring home our Cavalier puppies we would use 1/2 Goats milk and 1/2 water for a couple of months. They always loved it!

The woman who owns Answers has a PhD in microbiology. She drinks the raw goat milk that she sells, and even lets the cartons stand unopened at room temperature for 2 weeks to let it turn to curds, which she eats. They source from two specific types of goats that have the highest nutritional value, best bacteria, and best fats. Then they add a couple more types of bacteria, honey, and cinnamon. The dogs get raw grind from Primal, and I just add the raw goat milk to their food. I don't give the full recommended daily dosage (because of $$$$), but they get a hefty splash for each meal, twice a day.

I recently listened to Cooked (recorded version) on a road trip. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning about cooking, not just from a practical standpoint, but also a historical and socialogical POV as well.

Anyway, there is a section on probiotics and the author talks at length about the pros and cons of raw dairy products. He basically argues that proper handling has much more to do with the safety of dairy products than pasteurization. While the process definitely regulates the dairy industry and undoubtedly makes it easier to prevent e.coli or salmonella outbreaks on a national level, there are many food related illnesses caused by pasteurized products that weren't refridgerated properly. He then went on to make some very compelling arguments for the beneficial bacteria contained in raw milk. Definitely made me want to try it, both for myself and for the dog.

He also cited evidence that pasteurization has caused many dairy farmers to become very lax in their cleanliness since they know that the product is going to be pasteurized. Some pretty bad stories about that. Of course, these farms aren't selling their product raw, but just be careful where you source any raw products from.

Pasteurization also destroys the beneficial enzymes in raw milk, including lactase, which aids in the metabolism of lactose in milk. Lactose intolerance is the reason why so many can't drink pasteurized milk (and why many animals can't tolerate pasteurized cow's milk). Even for those who are not lactose-intolerant, the intake of high lactose levels in milk (and products made from pasteurized milk) can cause imbalances in other metabolic pathways that are not desirable.

I had just noticed that the Honest Kitchen was carrying goat's milk in a powder form but I am going to tryi your suggestion. Where are you buying it? Thanks.

Looks like there are quite a few places near you that carry the Answers Raw brand. I checked the website and there are also quite a few places near me. I'm going to try it.
