dmswartzfager
So Miss Scarlett has been on warfarin and aspirin for a week now (aortic thromboembolism). The heparin injections were stopped on Sunday, much to her relief. I took her to the cardiologist for the clotting time test on Thursday evening. She's now clotting more like a regular dog, as opposed to clots forming too quickly, but the cardiologist wants her to be on the low end of abnormally long clotting time. So, we're alternating warfarin 2mg and 3mg every other day, and we'll recheck next Thursday. She's walking around better, and is even trotting a little. Her right femoral pulse was absent last Tuesday; it is now back, albeit weakly. I finally got to see exactly how much she likes cats (as in, for breakfast) - she was determined to leave with the lady with the cat that had just been discharged. So, since she seems to like being outside and going for rides and stuff, but she can't really walk (and really shouldn't, until the clots are all gone), we're going to get her trained to use the world-famous Swartzfager greyhound cart. First lesson was last night; we'll take the show outside over the weekend with the nice weather. 4My2Greys
Glad to read about Miss Scarlett's positive update. She really landed in the perfect place with you. I'm currently going through the same issue with Nadir. He has a large thromboembolism located in the aortic trifurcation, which is blocking blood flow to his right femoral artery. dmswartzfager
What an excellent cat-sighting position Waiting to see how the first outdoor excursion went. It went fabulously. She enjoyed being able to turn her head around in all directions and watch the world go by, without having to worry about bumping into things. Brian thinks she's the first of our hounds to truly appreciate the cart. I'm not so sure about that - Frazzle thought the cart was fabulous for taking a nap and roaching. EllenEveBaz
I read your earlier account in the Cute & Funny forum, and meant to post here that I'd seen it. But now I'm rewarded for being lazy by getting more details about Queen Scarlett's procession. Do you lift her into the cart? Did she settle down easily into position? Frazzle What a sweetheart he was. Frazzle What a sweetheart he was. I do lift her into the cart. I seem to recall teaching the boys to get in on their own, and made it easier by dropping the rear panel for them... but more often than not, I lift the dogs in. She easily settles into a sit, and then I gently pull her front legs forward to get her down - she doesn't resist this. dmswartzfager
Scarlett had another episode in the van while we were driving to buy some more food for them - refusal to stand on her left leg, unable to get comfortable, and screaming in pain. We took her straight to the ER, where the doc on duty is young and doesn't want to do much of anything until she hears from the cardiologist. This time her left leg is affected, with a weak and intermittent femoral pulse (it's been a strong pulse until now). I think one of her clots moved. The ER doc basically sent us home until she hears from the cardiologist. Scarlett was given an injection of pain medications, but that's about it. So, we wait.
