Houndtime
Fuzzy has had diarrhea since the weekend. I had him to the vet on Monday. They used some kind of hook to gather a stool sample and said no parasites. He was not fed on Monday night and we started him on Metronidazole, 750 mg, 2 times a day as well as Diphenoxylate/Atropine which makes him very loopy. He is eating Hills WD and he is getting worse instead of better. I added rice today and made him some oatmeal tonight for tomorrow. Tuesday, after the fast he did have one solid poop, now it is just water. You can't pick up; Len just hosed the yard. I think we are switching him to a Purina prescription food tomorrow, but, I am not sure what they told me over the phone this afternoon. I am very worried about him. He is a very thin dog as is. He is very tired, but, I think that is the meds. greyhoundlady
I think you might want to keep him on a bland diet for a while - rice and boiled chicken or boiled beef. Don't change to dog food yet. I don't know his history as to how long you have had him, or how old he is, but digestive issues are usually helped by bland diets till the gut settles down. Hills never helped my boy with the poop problem - turns out he couldn't handle grains, especially corn.
Time4ANap
Sending fuzzy lots of good thoughts. Hope he is feeling better soon. We just had to do a 3 week course of metronidazole for Rocket, and he ate lots of scrambled eggs and overcooked rice along with a little canned. it took a couple weeks before he could tolerate kibble again. This seems to happen with him a couple times a year, so I know how frustrating what you are going through is. As far as the WD - we actually have better luck with Evanger's canned organic chicken. Nothing in it but organic chicken and water. it;s as bland as bland gets. Edited August 22, 2013 by Time4ANap Quote Camp Broodie. The current home of Mark Kay Mark Jack and LaVida I've Got Life. He usually clears up within two days of the WD. He was having a problem montly with the Heart Guard, but he seemed to overcome that. This is a new vet for us, and, I do like him a lot, but I am very worried about our big guy. Paul is going twice a week for laser treatment and now Fuzzy isn't feelng well and I am very a little overwhelmed and weepy. macoduck
Irene, have you ever tried the Cerenia injection? That was going to be my suggestion, too. Tylan powder is terrific. You can get it asap from your vet, but we order it from Amazon and keep it in the cupboard. Quote Old Dogs are the Best Dogs. ozgirl2
Have you fed him rice before? Cody became allergic to rice - found out (after years of soft poo) when she had colitis & vet said give her chicken & rice. She got worse - vet said switch to pasta & chicken - bingo! Then I had to find a food w/o rice!! (There are tons more of them now than there were then!) Just an idea - hope he improves soon!! Hugs! Guest Jacks_Human
Hope Fuzzy feels better soon. When Jack got major diarrhea last year (ate a snail that disagreed with him), the vet said it was because after the initial snail-induced bout, his gut bacteria was all imbalanced, hence continued super watery gross poop for several days. She gave him an antibiotic shot and some probiotic paste to eat with his food (he was on a bland diet for the week as well) and he started to improve that afternoon. Houndtime
They have changed Fuzzy's diet food this morning. This one is pork based. If he is not better by tomorrow, we are going to do some test for pancreatitis. I looked up the symptoms, and I don't think he has that. Guest Yankeegreyhound
Poor Fuzzy. Hope he's doing better today. Sonny had the big D a couple of weeks ago. I stopped all treats and put him on a bland diet. Couldn't figure out what the heck it was. He's never had it before. I was going to give it another day and then call the vet when I watched him outside. He ran out, did his business and then started drinking the water from the kiddy pool! The kids used the pool each day and then we would dump the water but sometimes, it sat there for a little while. It was under a tree that was dropping it's flowers and the flowers would go into the pool. Apparently, if we didn't dump it quick enough, Sonny was drinking the dirty flower water from the pool!!! Thank goodness I saw that when I did!
