Osteo Thread Part V I I

Recommended Posts

cas0673- hi, we saw the oncology specialist at Veterinary Oncology Services and Research Center in West Chester, unfortunately the radiation center is in Chalfont, Pa

HVS is in Malvern is around the corner from us. That would be easier travel wise but we started with this place and DrJeglum.

Good luck with the chemo on Wed. That is our first radiation day, or I would invite you over!!

krissn333- did you try pamidronate with Sutra along with the radiation or with something else? The protocol they are recommending is with the first radiation, and then every 3 weeks after for 4 times. Four weeks of radiation, 1st and 4th week with the pamidronate and then 2 more times 3 weeks apart with the pamidronate.

She does not exhibit pain so they are not doing it for that it would seem, just to get it going as they feel it will help overall with that area of bone.?

Greytblackdog- what did the radiation oncologist tell you? That it could help with bone recovery, strengthening that area, killing the bad cells? How much radiation did your doggy get and you are not starting the pamidronate until after the radiation is done??

I wanted to let everyone know that Casper took a turn for the worst and I had to say good bye to my boy today. He was at on oncologist yesterday and they did a sterile sample of Casper's urine to culture it. The antibiotic seemed to have stop being effective. He had some discomfort in the abdominal area and we were treating that with some pain meds. He was seemingly fine last night. This morning he was a little tired didn't want to eat much. I came home a couple hours later and he still was lethargic, so I called my vet and she said bring him in. We were going to do a pancreatitis test and she looked at his gums which were white. She immediately took chest and abdominal x-rays and there on the x-rays... fluid build up around his lungs and he only had a portion of his lungs left. It seemed that some tumors ruptured. There was nothing that could be done. He went peacefully and with all his dignity and I hope he knows he was loved. He was lucky to have me and I was to have had him. Each of my greys have enriched my life so deeply and differently from each other. Casper was a magnificent stark white, strong boy who ultimately was such a momma's boy. He was the most sensitive and thoughtful greyhound I have owned. We, as guardians/parents know this day will come and we hope we can give our pet the ultimate gift by freeing them. But Casper gave it to me! His body spared me the hard decision and decided it was time. I won't know the progression he would have endured, I won't have to see the deterioration of a strong, beautiful boy. He spared me of all that. I told him to send pennies from heaven to let me and Wynnie know he is ok. It hurts so deeply right now, but I really want all of you to help me celebrate such a wonderful dog. I really don't have any regrets, only that I wished he wasn't at the vet for 8 hours yesterday and that we all could have had one more "lovefest" that night. We all slept in the family room in case he needed to be let out during the night. At least we all together in one room. I wish I could say he is in a better place now, but he isn't because his better place was right here next to me in our house. Please toast to Casper this weekend as I will. I am one lucky girl to have known him! :)

Casper was 4 days shy of 10 months post dx. He was with me for 7 yrs 2 months. He was 10 yrs 4 months old. RIP my angle boy. Quincy is waiting for you!!

The oncologist just called to see if I was ok. He assured me that this happened quickly and that the discomfort yesterday wasn't painful for Casper. They detected nothing with his examination that is how quickly something like this can happen. Something somewhere started to hemorrhage, He will be missed very much. He won all girls hearts at the center.

Kim,

I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am that you lost Casper. There really no other words to adequately express my condolences. I, along with so many others, have lost a beloved to this horrid disease and feel the pain for each additional one lost. Hugs.

There was just an article on our news about the U of Penn study/vaccine, and there was a fawn greyhound with a front leg amp in it! I was wondering if it was anyone we know?

Kim I'm so sorry to read Casper has left us :(

Nessa-there is nowhere around here to get radiation, so, we just did pamidronate. Sutra was on Deramaxx and tramadol. When he started to limp we started pamidronate. I think he had three or four treatments three weeks apart. There seems to be diminishing returns with each treatment and the last one didnt really do anything for him. Then his kidney values, while still okay, were slightly borderline and our vet was not comfortable continuing the treatments.

We had six good months together before I had to let him go. He was such a fighter and I was so proud of him :heart

My experience with him helped me through when Pinky was diagnosed, and then when Fritz was diagnosed, and then when Carrie ended up with osteo too. Unfortunately I know wayyy too much about this and now I've been down the palliative road AND the amputation road. Neither road is easy and comes with it's own challenges. Wishing for the best for you and your girl :)

If you are talking about the CNN spot about the penn vaccine, that was Aspen. I've been talking to his Mom, she is from PA.

Kim, even when you know in your heart you did the right thing, it still hurts to say goodbye. I am so sorry to hear about Casper.

I finally got the official discharge papers and radiology report, and it was all good news!

The radiologist didn't even mention the "white spots" her oncologist told me about. In summary it said: no pulmonary nodules, no osseous lesions, no evidence of metastasis.

The discharge papers from her oncologist recommended seeing her again in 6 months, not the usual 3. I don't know if that was just him forgetting that I've always made 3-month appointments (a lot of clients don't), or if that is an indication that he feels her prognosis is better at this point.

Obviously, I am thrilled and humbled to have reached this point with Twiggy.

Run whole again Casper.

My wife and I gently said goodbye to our sweet Jesse yesterday in our living room. Very hard, but she was surrounded with love and comfortable with no pain. Thank you all here for your support. You all help ease the pain for so many others.

Chad and Jen.
