Unexpected Bleeding

tbhounds....my dermatologist sends her biopsies to California to be read so they will not be back until early next week. I asked her about whether the problem place was likely a MCT (therefore causing all the problems) and she said her gut reaction was no but the pathology report will confirm. Of the 8 places she removed on Monday, it was the one place on his left rib cage that blew up.

His platelets were 121,000 when they ran bloodwork but not sure what clotting profile was run. I may call the ER and ask for that info.

Last night and today, his left leg from his hock down is swollen to twice the size it should be; could be just gravity moving the blood down. All the swelling took place on the left side as that was the sight of the biopsy that caused the bleeding. He remains on the Amicar and herbs until tomorrow at 3 PM when he will get his last dose.

Think I would consult with Dr Couto ASAP.

Called and requested ER file be emailed to me to send for a consult to OSU ...thanks for confirming I am not being overly concerned.

May I assume that any supplements like fish oils have been stopped - they can act like aspirin and keep clots from forming.

yes, he is only on Springtime Fresh Factors and Advanced Hip & Joint but I stopped those a week ahead of his appointment. Thanks for asking as a reminder though :)

Is the vet sure that the area doesn't need surgical re-exploration to identify an occult bleeder?

Right now, they do not even want to puncture him to do anything that might cause additional bleeding. I will make a note of this as a question to pose to the vets next week. Thanks!

Consult request sent to OSU along with the ER medical file and pictures of the SQ bleed. My gut feeling is this is more than just a bleed and there is some underlying medical issue. Hopefully, OSU can offer some advice on our next move. And, the darn path report will be back soon.

Thanks again for all the well wishes and advice. Sometimes you just want someone to validate what you are thinking and it's so wonderful to have the experience and knowledge here to turn too!

How is Freight today? Swelling starting to resolve??

That left front leg is a little less swollen and the paw may be a tiny bit less swollen. What worries me is the blood pocket that came back on his side Thursday at his recheck is still the same size as it was then. Amicar and herbs are all done. Freight would not eat his kibble this morning but did eat pasta with canned food tonight.

Then, to add to all this Aimee ripped a nail on her 3 toed foot tonight and bled and bled. So, off we go back to the ER. The vet said he barely had to touch the nail and it came off so now she is bandaged and limping. Two out of four hounds at the ER in the same week...too much....

Is it possible Freight's continued bleeding and swelling are Vasculitis?

Hope everything turns out OK.

Not sure at this point but worth asking about...thanks for the advice.

My goodness you certainly deserve a break and some good news. I am dealing with things now, they are leveling off a bit.

The one thing I have learned from 2 people is that a dog with cancer should not have carbs, cancer and carbs are not good together.

I cut out the rice for Willie for sure. I know sometimes it is hard to get them to eat,I found boiling chicken breast is Willie's new food love!

I never knew about this myself, new to my grey having been diagnosed with 2 forms of cancer. :chow

Heard back on my consult request to OSU....because Freight weights 85 lbs, Dr Cuoto says the dosage of Amicar should be 1000 mg 3 times a day instead of the 500 mg. And, the pathology report came back clean....no hemangiosarcomas from any of the six biopsies...yippee! Internal specialist wants to see him if the place on his rib cage does not improve in the next 36 hrs. We still need to see why he had such a bad SQ blled.

But for now, I have a standing refill for Amicar :thumbs-up

Update on Freight... Today, we met with Dr Bailey, internal medicine specialist. She works in the same specialty center that Freight's dermatologist is in so she had already talked with her and reviewed his file. She remembered Freight because her first week at the practice was when he was admitted to the ER also located in the same practice and she looked at him then. The blood pocket on his side has improved a little each day since upping the Amicar, on Dr. Couto's recommendation, to 1000 mg 3X daily. We will keep him on the Amicar for another 5 days to finish addressing the blood pocket problem.

For now, she did not see any other medical reason in his file to do more testing since all his labs came back showing nothing out of the norm. So, we will always have Amicar in the house in case of emergencies and the protocol now is to start the 1000 mg of Amicar 48-72 hrs prior to any procedure whatsoever. Hopefully, sharing this will provide help for someone else going through this very scary situation.

Did you happen to take pictures???

Yes, I have a few on my camera from the first 2 days and will try to post them here. So far, the blood pocket is still there but very slowly reducing in size. I wonder if it will truly go away 100%. We have 3 more days of Amicar to take.
