Guest Marsroving
Mars has always done this but it has seemingly gotten worse recently because he is drinking more. What is happening is after Mars drinks water from his dish or crate bucket, he gags and coughs. It is worse from his raised water bowl and his bucket when it is higher up. I have started putting his bowl on the ground because it doesn't happen as extremely or as often. For awhile I've been messaging his throat after he drinks and that makes it lessen. Is this anything to be concerned about? Do we néed a vet consultation?
oldrunners
Are his throat glands swollen, preventing a smooth swallow?
Guest Marsroving
Not that I can feel.
msjpk
A trip to vet is in order. Also, video the episode and send to vet. Is he losing weight? Does it happen with kibble?
racindog
Goldie did a similar thing. Board certified vet said it was "drinkers cough" and nothing to worry about. It never caused him any issues.
ShebasMom
Sheba often does the same thing--from a raised water bowl--with no worries from the vet or me.
Guest JessieRahl
Claire does the same thing. I've always just assumed that she drinks too fast.
Guest RICHandJUDE
I have had 5 greyhounds over the years and 2 of them always coughed and gagged after drinking water. My 7 year old Beagle coughs and gags everytime she takes a drink . I don't know if they drink to fast or what.
