macoduck
Within 1.5 hours of getting her rabies vaccine, Gracie had a horrible reaction. By then her regular vet was closed but the e-vet was nearby. She was given benadryl and dexamethasone injections, with instructions to give her oral benedryl pills for 5 days. Overnight the swelling has gone down by a third and she is much less distressed. The swelling went as high as above her eyebrows at its worst, making her look like a sharpei. She'd never had trouble with a rabies vaccine before. Guest Clawsandpaws
Poor thing! I thought that reactions typically exhibited themselves around the injection site? So scary, did she get the 3 year? Glad she is improving sending good thoughts
macoduck
Yes, it was the 3 year so this will be her last since she is 13 years old. The receipt from her checkup had the disclaimer to report swelling/reactions/etc from the injection. The actual injection site was fine. Guest PiagetsMom
Yes, I had a girl who could not tolerate them when she got older, but her reaction was a large lump and swelling at the injection site. Hope Gracie gets back to normal very quickly!
3greytjoys
Wow, Gracie's reaction is more severe than our reactive pets have been. Glad Gracie won't have to have any more rabies shots. (I keep a record of a vaccine's manufacturer whenever our pets have a reaction so I can avoid it in future.) Thank you for posting these pictures. I still swear Rainey's brain issues started from her rabies shot she got just before the seizures started hope your baby is doing better! Yes I think it did my Minny in too. He was fine until he got his shot at 9 yoa. Never had any problems whatever before with anything health wise. HE REACTED IMMEDIATELY WENT DOWN AND NEARLY DIED. They "saved" him but weeks later he had a bad seizure- and did not last 2 weeks after that. I am really struggling with whether or not to take my precious and completely healthy Reba for hers next month. There is no question vaccinations cause chronic and sometimes fatal consequences. In fact from what I've read the risk of injury from the vaccines is far more likely than the risk of the diseases. JMO. Kisses to Gracie. How horrible a thing to have to go through. Hope she heals quickly. Edited June 12, 2013 by racindog

Blaidd49
Given the severity and the location of the reaction, I wonder if she reacted to the diluent rather than the vaccine Very unusual (in the type of reaction) and very scary - glad she is on the mend. tbhounds
We are starting to see more frequent reactions to Rabies vax. Unusual as it was rarely see here before. Your vet should report the reaction (lot#, serial #). Fwiw-we would treat the reaction in the same manner. Scary :-(
MaryJane
Those pictures look pretty tough. While not exactly common, there can be severe reactions to vaccines -- I'm so sorry that this happened to Gracie and I hope that she'll be OK. Your vet should report the reaction (lot#, serial #). Fwiw-we would treat the reaction in the same manner. Scary :-( The e-vet said I should call my regular vet who administered the vaccine, even though e-vet visits are auto faxed to primary vets. Before I could make the call my vet's office was calling to check on her. What do think of Blaidd49's comment regarding the diluent possibly being the culprit? Gracie's face is almost back to normal this evening. And she was able to eat her dinner without me having to make her kibble into soup this time.
