Sneeze/reverse Sneeze

I've heard of a dog reverse sneezing and have one dog that does it on occasion. But, one of my other greys that 'never' does this began doing it several times throughout the day for the past few days. What could be the cause? Do dogs get colds that cause this type of sneeze?

Luna will usually reverse sneeze right after she comes in from outside and was giving things a good sniff, particularly in the spring and summer. I usually attribute it to some mild allergy or pollen up the nose. Do you find it usually occurs when your grey is outside or just came in?

ETA: My first hound used to reverse sneeze as well, and it stressed him out quite a bit, so the vet recommended rubbing the underside of his neck and gently covering his nose so he'd breathe through his mouth and slow down his breathing.

Peggy does that too, especially at this time of year and it's alarming at first. You'd imagine it's not a good thing in case they drew bugs down into their lungs, but it must have evolved because it is useful.

Due to a very late Spring and the sudden arrival of Summer, pollen has peaked alrmingly high here in the UK; I don't like it either... yesterday I took 3 showers - early Morning, 2pm after gardening, and 11pm to clear myself from it! OK I could take anti-histamines but I'd rather feel like i was actually all there

With Vivie, I can usually just say something soothing to her and/or rub her neck and it calms her down, which slows her breathing and makes her stop. It is super alarming though. Like she's suffocating.

I have no evidence of this but with our dogs that have "reverse sneezed" it's been more like a "reverse hiccup." It seems more uncontrollable than a sneeze. Rescue Remedy helps sometimes, sometimes not, rubbing the throat and nose helps sometimes, sometimes not. Ive never yet seen a definitive diagnosis of what it actually IS physically.

Reverse sneezing is mostly often due to allergies, but can also be due to any other cause of irritation in the back of the throat (the nasopharyngeal area or back of the soft palate). This is the area that gets irritated when you have post-nasal drip. Dogs reverse sneeze to try to clear that area. Here's a good article that lists some of the possible causes.

My beloved bridge kid Ivy-Blue did this sometimes. It was due to some kind of allergy and without any importance...
