We have only encountered one scary still dog on a leash. Rainy refused to turn her back to it so we could walk away. She knew it wasn't safe. That scary stillness scares me more than any frothing and lunging. That frozen focused dog means deadly business

I will always fear a quiet, focused, tense dog much more than a barking, jumping one. This is a great article.

 

One of the things we tend to see here in T&B is people taking one behavior, or part of a behavior (such as growling) out of the context of the entire interaction. I have to remind myself to look at the situation, the dog's body language, any other animals in the area (because it might not be about me ;) ), where the toys are, etc., to make sure I understand why a dog is growling (for example).
