Aleeya Is Gone. 3/7/2000 - 4/21/2013

I sort of hoped I'd never have to post in here. I know that's crazy, but you all know what I mean.

Aleeya (that was her official name, and we just kept it :) ) had to go to the bridge yesterday.

Turns out that what was causing her limp was not some random injury from the ice earlier in the winter, but a ginormous tumor that grew very fast, in her shoulder (the upper part of what I guess is the ulna bone?). We could actually feel the protrusion for a few days, and were just hoping against hope that her shoulder was dislocated or something like that.

We didn't see anything on the xrays we took in January (she collapsed, was dehydrated, that was the only thing we could figure out) and started limping a week or 2 later... so I guess the da#n thing just really grew quickly.

She was 13yrs, 1 month, 2 weeks. We have her littermate Haka (see pic in my sig).

Aleeya was a delight. TOTALLY different in personality from her brother-- she was silly, she TRULY smiled (i.e. if you tickled her, she would give you the biggest scary toothy grin and freak most people right out). She never quite learned "fetch" but enjoyed chasing the toy and then running by you but not GIVING it to you! Her brother was the fun-police, and he'd stand in the middle of her zoomie circle and try to catch her-- but she was SOOOOOO FAST, he never could.

She loooooved our neighbor's dogwood shrub (the kind with red twigs) soooo much-- she'd go over to in on our walks, totally ignoring the little white westies in the backyard (behind the fence of course) and just STAND in the shrub, hypnotized.

She loved to lie in a sunbeam, and had me so well trained  that once it was hot out, she'd stand by the back sliding door, asking to go out and sit on her cushion in the sun. For like, 10 minutes... then she'd stand up again and want to come inside. Clearly, she was part cat.

I just miss her so much. I remember reading on GT about "heart dogs" and until Aleeya, I was like, huh? But now, I know. :beatheart

Here's a picture of her from the 1st year we got her (she was already 7, having had 2 litters of pups after her short but successful career racing!)

thanks for listening,

Soren
