Meloxicam Question

Recommended Posts

Hi again,

Robin started meloxicam on Tuesday for his arthritis, particularly in his spine. He gets half of a pill once a day. I started him in the evening because it was the evening of his dental, so the med was doing double duty. But I'm wondering, is it better for him to have it in the morning or in the evening? When is it most effective? If it is wearing off by the time of the next pill, then morning seems to make more sense. But if it doesn't matter, then evening would be better because he is more likely to eat the pill (he's picky in the mornings).

Or does it not matter anyway because once he's been on it a while, it's kind of an all-around anti-inflammatory, and doesn't vary much throughout the day.

Does anyone know?

I don't think time of day matters. What's critical, though, is pepcid about 30 minutes before he eats, then the meloxicam after he's eaten. If he doesn't eat much, you may need to withhold the pill until he has eaten.

Meloxicam the pill is inexpensive, but it appears to be more likely to trigger ulcers in dogs than the very expensive liquid version (metacam). I was giving Sam less than a half-pill (cut it with a pill splitter, then snipped off corners with kitchen shears) and he always got it after his 2-cup breakfast, and after less than three months on meloxicam he had an ulcer (blood in his poop). Now, because of the ulcer, he can't take any NSAIDs. There's a recent thread about Sam's ulcers, and some of GreyTalk's vets and tech people chimed in about the hazards of the pill form.

(Sam was taking the meloxicam for arthritis pain in his spine, too. He gets methocarbamol (muscle relaxer), tramadol, and gabapentin daily.)

I definitely would not give it on an empty stomach, but I would try and give it at the same time every day. Toni gets hers in the morning after breakfast. I've not noticed a significant fall off in effectiveness throughout the day, and she's bright and bouncy the next morning, too. She gets half a 7.5 mg pill and weighs 74 pounds.
