Guest grey_dreams
... She's been an itchy dog from the moment we adopted her 2 years ago ... ... Last night I found an area she had scratched to the point of bleeding. She's also super flaky...
tbhounds
"No rashes, redness or lesions-didn't seem itchy" was stated in the very first post. Confused here.
Guest grey_dreams
Yes, me too. Could be a combination of allergy + corticosteroid + maybe not completely accurate observations/interpretations, especially in light of temporary drug suppression of symptoms? Guest mld
I would definitely try to rule things out at home. Food being one, a lot of foods out there contain dyes and fillers! Lamb and rice (home cooked) and see if these symptoms subside???
Guest Cindysgreyt
Sorry, that did sound confusing. When I first noticed the hair loss, she didn't have any redness, rashes, or lesions. It was only after a few weeks of the losing hair that a red spot cropped up. Then, the flakiness started. I say she's been an itchy dog, but the Temaril has kept her comfortable and she's had a gorgeous coat for the past 2 years....up until a few weeks ago when this all started. I'm not opposed to taking her off the Temaril....but then she's miserable. She will most definitely scratch until she's bleeding all over. I don't really know what to do here. Until we figure out what's making her lose hair, I'm not sure what to do. She's miserable now....even with the Temaril. I'm going on the advice of my vet here, since she obviously knows more than I do. She is a greyhound knowledgeable vet, but what everyone says here is that basically she's wrong. I will bring up my concerns on Tuesday when we see her again. I do thank everyone for the input. It's a lot to consider. Ideally, I would love to see her off medication and her symptoms subside. I am staying on top of the problem, so fingers crossed we get some answers.

Guest grandmagrey
Our 8 yr old girl Snowy, is also a white hound with brindle ticking on her ears and around her eyes. We've had her just a few months. When she came to us she was full of dermatitis and horribly itchy. Benadryl and oatmeal baths as well as bag balm rubs helped sooth her. Soon the dermatitis healed. Now she is shedding like crazy! We hope its just a normal phase. Good luck and please keep us posted!
tbhounds
Your current vet may be a wonder greyhound knowledgable Dr but some times you need a specialist opinion-I honestly feel you need to see a dermatologist at this point. There are plenty more options for your hound than Temaril P. Giving Temaril is treating the symptoms but, not addressing the underlying disease.
