We know a lot about waiting and worrying at our house. And we'll wait and worry with you until you get something definitive. Glad he's resting comfortably.

We're back! Satchel had a good night sleeping, except waking up at 2:30am HUNGRY! So he ate, went out, and slept again comfortably. He's gone from unable to stand to going up and down stairs by himself in 48 hours! :beatheart :beatheart

Anyway, the neurologist says she's 95% certain it was a stroke. There are no obvious tumors on the MRI, or anything in the blood or anything to suggest otherwise. As usual then, they can't really say why it happened, but that it usually doesn't happen again. All his neurological tests showed radical improvement. So in the pantheon of things this could have been, this is about the best it could be. Just looking at him, he's back to his old self, just a little weak still on one side, but hardly noticeable at all! I don't want to be too optimistic, but :balloonparty :balloonparty :balloonparty :balloonparty :balloonparty

Greyt pupdate! If aspirin therapy hasn't been mentioned, perhaps an online consult with OSU would be in order. Isn't it amazing how "hungry at 2:30 am" is a wonderful thing after your experiences in the past few days? :balloonparty

Worried about Satchel. Wondering where you live...we are in ohio. Ohio state university has a greyhound wellness program that can help w the high cost if medical care. Dr. Kellog is a wonderful vet and specialist in the breed. She will do phone consults w your vet for the uniqueness of our hounds best interest.

Advice? I would treat my animals just like people. Ask the vet :What info will you gain from an mri? Will it change the course of treatment or just satisfy curiosity? Will it give a definative diagnosis? There is no reason to put our pets or our people thru tests that are not going to change the treatment plan.

Thinking of Satchel and hoping for the best.

Hopefully this is the final update!

Thanks everyone for relating their stories and knowledge. It helped a lot - I was pretty sure we were losing Satchel Sunday night. But here we are on Friday, and he's basically 95% back to normal. After all the testing, it was determined he most likely had a stroke, but no underlying cause was determined. I asked about aspirin therapy, and the doctor said that without an obvious underlying heart or blood-related cause, or without a history of multiple incidents, she doesn't recommend it, and that it might even be contra-indicated. However, she said if I wanted to, to go ahead - but I think I'll stick with her advice.

So hopefully, that's it. We can get back to normal now, enjoying every day we have together, because you never know...

That's great news! I'm so glad he's mostly OK. I hope he'll be around and healthy for a good long while yet.

Our best to Satchel. Sir Elton had a stroke in August. Many of same symptoms you described. He'll be 14 on 12/2 and has always been very healthy. We had the vet come. She diagnosed stroke and said they either do or don't recover. He has recovered a lot but was left with pain and anxiety and some confusion. It took over 3 weeks before I felt he was getting his personality back. He is on several meds (has his own pill box!) and we take it carefully to keep his needs and condition foremost in our minds. Just be patient about his recovery. You will rejoice in each thing that is so "Satchel". I don't know about the rest too much. My girlfriend was told 3 months ago her Grey's spleen was like Swiss cheese. She chose a wait and see approach. Ricky walks miles and is pretty normal. Take care and we hope for the best for you and. Yours.

Quick update. Satchel just had his eleventh birthday, eleven months after his stroke. I'm happy to say there were no further complications or recurrence, and he's trucking along. He's still old and wobbly, and his daily walks are getting shorter, but he's in good shape, and happy. He's even welcomed a six month old lab puppy to the house since then with no problems. :balloonparty
