krissn333
He'd been peeing a lot in the house, but UA has been all clear. Doc took a slide of some of his smegma a week and a half ago and it was riddled with bacteria, so we started him on cephalexin. Went back today as we're still not seeing improvement. She checked his prostate and it's painful for him...so now he's on zeniquin. Hopefully that will knock it out. Anyone else dealt with this? Does it tend to reoccur? JJNg
Is Fritz neutered? Prostatitis is very rare in neutered males. Did your vet take x-rays or do an ultrasound to check his prostate? Did she say if his prostate was enlarged? krissn333
He is neutered but wasn't neutered until he was almost 4. She did a hand examination and said that it seemed to be a little swollen and it was clearly painful, from Fritz's reaction once she was handling it. He's on Zeniquin. JJNg
Age of neuter shouldn't really matter since the prostate shrinks within a few months after surgery, after testosterone levels drop. A straightforward prostatitis is almost never seen in neutered males. An enlarged prostate in a dog who has been neutered for years raises the suspicion of some source of testosterone (such as remaining testicular tissue, or other rare conditions like atypical Cushing's disease) or prostate cancer. I really hope Fritz is the exception, and that this is a simple infection that will resolve with antibiotics. krissn333
Hoping so...we just started the Zeniquin the other day. He had been on cephalexin for about 2 weeks when our vet decided to try to palpate his prostate, and he clearly had pain while she was doing that (not just normal discomfort from the examination).
