Oh Boy...stairs...

So last night Teddi learned how to climb up the stairs but he hasn't quite figured out how to make it back down. I don't want him to go upstairs however--my room is on the first floor and I don't want him to have the opportunity to do anything bad in my roommate's part of the house. Is there a way to teach him to not go up these stairs without the use of a baby gate? Or do you have a favorite baby gate for the stairs? I'm trying to find something that would not hinder the use of the stairs.

We put a baby gate up so Bessie can't get downstairs while she recovers from her spay sugary. It's worked great so far!

I talked to my roommates who've suggested we get a walk through baby gate and put it not at the bottom of the actual stairs but at the landing coming into the living room (at a 90 degree angle to the stairs). I think I'll head over to Walmart tonight and see what I can find. I'm nervous to put a baby gate on the actual stairs--i'm just afraid that some one will get hurt at night if they don't remember the stairs, or if there are guests over, etc.. Our landlords are supposed to fix the light in the stairwell, but they haven't yet. The wall at the left side of the stairs doesn't extend past the stairs, so putting one there isn't possible. I'm also a renter so I don't want something that screws into the wall. This is so confusing haha!

You can get walk through pressure mounted baby gates. We had one on our stairs for years. You can get one that you can walk through with no problems.

I rent and use a walk through pressure mounted gate that my landlord/family friend used for their baby. It's great! But I am also training Siri that when the gate is open she is still not allowed up. She has caught on quickly.

I have friends that use a short baby gate that you can step over for their stairs. My dogs have never tried to go over it but that may not be true for all dogs. Dexter could easily leap it but he's terrified of baby gates.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll get a pressure mounted gate and then we'll start teaching Teddi to not go up with the gate open. Hopefully we'll be able to one day teach him to not go up the stairs at all. I'm afraid he'll hurt himself on the way down--it's a steep, wooden staircase and watching him come down them has me terrified that he'll slip and hit the wall at the bottom.
