winnie
DH and I have been feeding our grey girls Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice for several years. They like it and have done well on it. However, in light of the FDA report someone recently posted, we are considering changing foods. The problem... many of the foods recommended in other threads are rather expensive. We currently pay $30 for a 40 lbs. bag of dog food. Please folks, don't criticize me for trying to save a few bucks. I love my dogs and want them to eat well. I'm just not of the thought that one has to pay top dollar for a good dog food. Diamond - at $30 bag - was a 4-star rated food. We're just trying to find something comparable in both ingredients and price. TheFullHouse
I hear you! We've been feeding Costco. Finding a good food that isn't going to cost an arm and two legs to feed our crew is proving to be a challenge. EnzaFerrari
I'd be curious as well. And for me, it's an over quality of life for Enza as funds are increasingly tight. If I have to spend a lot more on food, I'll have to scale back on dog walking and that is not an option with my schedule.

winnie
DH was price shopping at lunch. We were thinking of trying the Pro Plan Selects recommended in another thread. We figured that it would be reasonably priced considering that it's made by Purina. Well, it's $50 for a 33 lbs. bag compared to the $30 we pay now for a 40 lbs. bag. Plus, it only has a 3-star rating compared to Diamonds 4-star. winnie
Our first greyhound, Celeste, was on IAMS when we first got her but it didn't seem to agree with her system. Any thoughts on BJs Wholesale Berkley and Jensen dog food? It has a 4-star rating. I'm not sure of the cost either. Any ideas on who makes it? http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/berkley-jensen/ Quote Laura with Celeste (ICU Celeste) and Galgos Beatrix and Encarna The Horse - Gracie (MD Grace E) Bridge Angels Faye Oops (Santa Fe Oops), Bonny (Bonny Drive), Darcy (D's Zipperfoot)
Guest Yankeegreyhound
I feed the kids Pro Plan shredded chicken and rice. I don't think it's the "select" one. Not sure if there is a difference . It's what our adoption group in STL used and we just always stayed with it. I can get it on sale, a big bag, for around $35. ETA - oh wow. Just read the review. Never mind! Edited May 22, 2012 by Yankeegreyhound
Guest MyCody
I fed Pro Plan Beef for years to our first four greys until they went to the shredded and then they wouldn't eat it. I've since been feeding TOTW salmon, but we know what happened with TOTW, what a major let down. The other day, a fellow RI grey owner, recommended Regal Salmon Bites. I started the girls on it yesterday and they love it. The company has never had a recall and we paid. $38.51 for a 30 lb bag, with tax. It is not carried in many stores here but my local store said she would try to get it for me.
Guest BrianRke
Winnie, do you have a Southern States close to you? They have a food out now called Southern States Naturals Chicken, Rice and Pearled Barley. The ingredient list looks very comparable to Diamond's and its 28.99 for a 40lb bag. Here is the link: http://www.southernstates.com/catalog/p-9156-southern-states-naturals-chicken-rice-barley-40lb.aspx I was feeding Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice too and I switched to this mixed with some Fromm's. They had no problems making the transition!
GreyhoundGirl
I'm curious as well. I switched mine to Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach and while I have FINALLY seen solid poop from them they're shedding like crazy and both their coats look terrible so I think it might be time to look at another food. It makes me sad because I love the ProPlan and I really love the sollid poop. I tried Costco but they didn't do great on it and I opened a bag and found ants and twigs in the bag-kind of put me off it! I'm hearing good things from Fromm's but it's REALLY expensive. Time4ANap
Don't go just by the price per bag. Check the feeding instructions and figure out how much you will actually use. With some foods, based on calories etc, you may end up using less per meal than you do presently, making a bag last longer than your current food does. We used to use a 30lb bag of TOTW every 3 weeks for Rocket. We switched to Precise Foundation Chicken Meal and Rice which comes in a 40lb bag if you get it from a retail store, or a 30 lb bag if you order online. With the 40 lb bag, we only buy food every 5-6 weeks- so the 40lb bag goes almost twice as far as the TOTW did. Precise actually has bonus sized bags most of the time with 10% more food for the same price, so we often get 44 lbs for the price of 40, which goes even farther. Quote Camp Broodie. Hubcitypam
I was feeding Purnia One Beyond Chicken and Oatmeal for a while. I really liked it and so did all of My Three Sons. It is not as cheap as Kirkland, but I can find it at Kroger or Petco for somewhere around $23 for 15 pounds. I think it is a good food for the price - check the calories though as Buddy gained weight on it when I neglected to factor that in when I switched food. The sainted Dog Food Advisor ( who I don't always agree with) gives it 3 stars and says However, it’s unfortunate the company chose to include menadione in its recipes. Without this controversial supplement and minus the generic animal fat, we would have been compelled to award this brand our next higher rating. They are now eating the Pro Plan Weight Management which they like and it is not shredded. Easier on me as Poodle can eat it instead of the Natural Balance (made by Diamond) he was on -- it's low enough in fat. it was right at $30 for 18 pounds (including tax) at Petco. Guest Whistle
If Nature's Select delivers to your area, they are definitely worth checking out. I fed this in the past and all 5 do well on it. We are now switching back to it from Diamond Naturals. http://www.naturalpetfooddelivery.com/ Mine do best on this formula (chicken and beef with salmon and sunflower oil). I pay $78.50 for 80 pounds. Guest WhiteWave
Enhance is usually pretty reasonable priced if you can find it. Usually at feed/tack stores. Professional Endurance or Hunters Edge Premium is pretty close to Diamond Natural Chicken. http://www.enhance3022.com/products#in-season or http://www.enhance3022.com/products#professional Also heard good things about Black Gold. http://www.blackgolddogfood.com/cornfree.htm Exclusive is another option, probably about the closest ingredient wise to Diamond. http://www.exclusivepetfood.com/dog/ECMD2-0031755.aspx
Fostr_Mom
I don't know what I am going to do either. Kyle can only eat the beef kibble. Very limited choices and cost is a factor for me. Gracie has only been on the Diamond beef since I adopted her, so I don't know how she would do with chicken or lamb. I can't afford to buy 3 different bags of food all the time (I also foster). How does feeding raw compare in price to kibble? Quote <p>Mom to Kyle (Diehard Kyle) & Angel Gracie (KB's Sankey) Foster Mom for AFG

Guest happygrey
Wow the Infinia foods get a great rating on the dog food advisor. I can't find any pricing info anywhere though. The salmon based food doesn't get as high a rating though. And that's the one I'd be interested in.

There's usually a 15 or 20% off coupon code on the site for first time customers as well. The free shipping is for orders over a certain amunt, but even when I've paid for shipping it's cheap, and the order arrives in 2 days. Great site with great service. Quote Camp Broodie. Guest jbbuzby
I had this problem too. I was hunting on amazon and found Nature's Variety chicken and rice, and that seems pretty decent; 4 star rating on dogfoodadvisor.com and with subscribe and save, I get 30lbs for $42 and it's delivered every month. I also have seen it pretty regularly in pet feed stores so it won't be hard to find if need be. We've started switching, and so far the pups are fans! racindog
What about Southern States? Their hallmark is quality feeds/foods and they are headquartered in Richmond. I checked with them yesterday and they said "Our line of Southern States brand dog food includes Complete, Advanced, and Natural; none of which are produced by Diamond. Our manufacturing sites are located in the heart of the farming community where raw materials are produced. (St. Marys Ohio , Kansas City Kansas , and Owatonna Minnesota ) Our locations allow us to build long term relationships with local producers ensuring that only the highest quality, freshest ingredients go into the production of our foods." As a result of this and other marketing factors they are also very reasonably priced. I'm switching my farm dog to it. It is the only dog food I know of that I can't remember ever having been recalled that is a pretty good quality food.
