I'm finally figuring out how to take photo's in the house without using a flash. I took this one of Bandita this morning.

DSC_0410_zpse7a7b674.jpg

I'm sure there is something I could have done to make it a bit better but I was really happy with the photo, especially since it's one of just a few that I've taken without a flash!

i pretty much have stopped using flash indoors and only use it outdoors -- just my preference.

bandita's eyebrows are awesome.

I just bought a Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. It's very compact (less than 1" long) and uses a stepper motor for fairly fast, quiet AF. One experimental shot:

You know Jan, I don't remember. I was playing with so many settings at the time at different points in the room.

Judy, the settings should be recorded in the EXIF data in the file. Right click of the file, click properties and then the "Details" tab. You should also be able to see the EXIF data in your photo editor, depending on what you use.

Your welcome. You can also edit many of the fields to add information the camera didn't record

Is there any sites to add a free water mark logo on a picture?

i'm guessing that most photo sites will allow you to watermark your pictures as you will provide the siggy. but not sure if it requires you to have a site that is considered "professional" grade (you sell) where you pay an annual fee, or a free site. you should add copyright information in your pictures' IPTC metadata. you can do that in your camera settings or with your photo-editing software.

in my case i uploaded my signature file and changed my gallery settings to have it shown on all my display copies of my original pictures (the originals are not watermarked -- just the display copies which you see on the screen).

Here are a couple of shots I took at a picnic at the adoption center. Audrey was playing in the pool and after while started to draw some cheers from the crowd with her antics:

1044694_456864914409261_52709589_n.jpg

I pulled these from a longer sequence i shot while she played.

Camera is a Canon 50D with a 28mm lens shot with f/5.6 and 1/500 shutter speed and 100 ISO. The camera shoots about 6 frames per second so all I need to do is mash the shutter button down and hold it until she is done. The whole sequence is about 100 pictures and there are quite a few "Money Shots"; (I included the best here)

ETA: I am hosting these on Facebook and I believe they have been downscaled somewhat. They are 15 Megapixel photos and the only place to view them in their proper format is on my HDTV. (I use Apple TV to stream photos over an HDMI)

Today I got the remark on this picture that it was cute, nice colors and so on but hard to look at because there is motion unsharpness?
Honest, I don't see it but I also know my eyesight is getting worse so I may miss it.
Anyone willing to let me know where I should look?

I've been talking a lot lately but not posting any pics - so here are some of mine. Flickr is a little pick about linking to pictures so let's see if this works.

Here's a shot of Tip running. The tip of his tail got cut off but otherwise it came out OK.

Olive and Tip together

I got this one in the backyard. I had given up on getting a nice shot. It was getting late in the day. I looked down and Olive was looking into the sun. I took this shot real quick. I like the way her body becomes part of the background and you have a nice profile of her face.

7075341689_04410f7e4c_z.jpg

This is their buddy Jasha the borzoi. He was standing still so i had a little time to compost the shot. That background is just crappy dead winter grass, but the DOF is so narrow it becomes a solid background.

7075341633_fe67c55e82_z.jpg

I've been playing around with off-camera flash lately. I like it - Tip and Olive are not impressed.

Bill,

These pics are stunning! I really like the necklace the doggies have on. Where can I get one for when I finally adopt my greyt?

Thanks!

i don't see what they're referring to, petra. but i'm no expert, and my eyesight isn't great, either. but sharpness is sometimes over-rated.

They might be referring to the background. The points of light filtering through the trees around her muzzle might be drawing attention away from the hound.

I personally love this photo. The "Action" or "Motion" implied in this shot makes the whole composition JUMP. Like a photo of a race car just about to leave the start line :bunny

To me, the tension caused by the background only adds to the photo and holds the viewers interest longer.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments on the pics.

The tags are from here

http://www.luckypet.com/categories.php?cat=311

The collar part is a show slip collar. I bought them at a dog show. It's made so you can pull a loop through one of the metal hoops on the end. But I just put both hoops on the tag so it can't tighten around their necks. They have larger collars with name and rabies tags. I just find them distracting in the portrait photos. You can see them in the action shots.

Here's one link for the collars

On becoming a light stand.

I was reading some older Strobist blog posts last week and got pulled into the posts on cross-lighting and on-axis fill. At some point I ran across this post;

http://strobist.blogspot.com/2008/11/on-axis-fill-run-and-gun-version.html

There's plenty of info in the post, and in this one - http://strobist.blogspot.com/2008/11/on-assignment-wimax.html

The thing that stuck with me was his description of the "run and gun" version. He's photographing students working on a project in a stream. He can't setup a stand, so he's holding a flash in his left hand, and triggering it wirelessly from the camera. The key light is the one in his left hand, the on-camera flash is fill, and the ambient is his background. Three lighting levels, all adjustable, and very mobile.

I saw another post by Jack Arias where he described an umbrella swivel on a short copper pipe

This sounded perfect for photographing creatures with short attention spans.

Like - oh I don't know - GREYHOUNDS!

I tried it this past weekend. I need to get better at it. I got some bad results, along with some really bad results. But a few keepers slipped through. Here are the best ones.

Posing for a treat.

And finally - Jasha the borzoi

Given that the setup for each shot was about four seconds I'm happy with the results. I just tried to position myself so the dog was between me and an interesting background, kneel down, focus recompose, and shoot. By then the subject was headed my way to lick the lens.

I'm playing with some camera settings that I think will make it easier. I'm also working on a hand-holdable bracket to make the off camera flash easier to hold and use a small softbox.
