Non-Grey Medical Question

Skah was laying down and jumped up (he does this a lot as being deaf, he feels every step/jump our six month old kittens make) and seemed to be off-balance and walked sideways for about eight feet before falling into a wall. I came after him to make sure he didn't fall down the steps and that freaked him out more (he didn't see me coming) until I got to him and made him sit and wrapped my arms around him and just held him for a few minutes.

He wasn't shaking. His heart wasn't racing. His eyes were normal.

Once I let him get up, he was fine, just a bit jumpy (which he does when something scared him, which unfortunately happens often). He's fine now, acting normally other than being a bit jumpy.

I'm not sure if this is a medical thing. He has a habit of laying on one or both of his back legs wrong and them falling asleep and him gimping around until he gets the feeling back. He also has a habit of stepping on his long tail. Maybe both happened and he got off balance?

I'm looking for ideas. Like I said, he's fine now and is relaxing and acting normal. I am not wanting to take him into the vet if I don't have to because he freaks out there and he will most likely injure my shoulder (still recovering from surgery), and I really don't want to take him in if it was truly a case of "ooops... my leg went numb and I lost balance" but I absolutely will if something happens again.

ETA: Right now he's acting like he saw something that scared him. But this dog FREAKS OUT when he sees even a plastic bag on the floor out of place. And if you believe in that sort of thing, we do have a friendly ghost in the house that does play with the dogs from time to time and he's acting like SOMETHING from down the hall scared him.... and 10 minutes later, he's laying down half snoozing and half watching the house like he always does.

Are we an oldie?? How was the last bloodwork?

Nope. He's just barely four. Had the full range of blood tests just 9 months ago. Came up absolutely fine.
