Guest greygirls2
Friday morning at 2am I got a hysterical call from my daughter in law....something was wrong with her grey Alyx. He seemed paralyzed on his right side, feet knuckling under, couldn't stand up, had vomited and possibly had a seizure. I rushed out there and he was laying on the living room floor. His panting had slowed, I checked hi eyes, gums, heart rate etc. and he seems to be calming down....until he tried to get up and then the panic would set in once again. We sat with him on the floor and got him to eat a few cookies and drink some water so it seemed his tummy had settled. We decided to wait till our own vet opened and take him there rather than rush out to the ER since he seemed to be comfortable. By 4:30 am he needed to go out to pee and poop since it was his regular time so we used his harness and a towel to help him up and guide him outside. He was now trying to use the legs on the affected side but was overextending them and couldn't hold his weight. So he did his business finally.....he's very modest and with two of us looking on he wasn't comfortable. We got him back inside and he went to sleep, he was so exhausted. We got him to the vet first thing when they opened, course by now we are thinking the worst, brain tumor, spinal stroke etc. They did an extensive exam while we waited for blood work results. All his systems came back clear and we were just waiting now for the snapx4 results. When they came back it was positive for Anaplasmosis! He had all the classic symptoms but I never gave that a thought. They are still treating him for seizure disorder with Pottassium bromide just in case but we aren't sure now if it really was one or if the violent thrashing was just a panic reaction to not being able to get up. He did have what they think was a focal seizure a few weeks ago though. So he's on a round of doxy for the Anaplasmosis and by the second dose he was good as new, walking with no problem at all. In hindsight they had noticed he was getting a little slower, meaning taking the stairs more cautiously, not wanting to go as far on walks, eating a little less.......subtle things that don't ring an alarm. The disease is serious but they caught it and with the doxy treatment he should make a full recovery and be good as new. He came to them when I got JJ...they came off of the track together, he will celebrate his 8th birthday in April. When I got there that morning the first thing I told him is it was NOT his time to go meet JJ at the Bridge! We are so thankful for the good outcome because this past month has been nothing but heartbreak. So please everyone...be very aware of slight symptoms, these tick born diseases are killers and with the mild winter we've had you can be sure we are going to have the mother load of ticks this coming season. I'm going to get my girls tested this week because we've already treated Laci once each for Lyme and Anaplasma. JJ had tested positive for Anaplasm twice but neither was ever symptomatic. Fiona3
Thanks so much for this information. I've made a note of it for reference as we live in an area with lots of ticks. I am so glad that your vet found the infection and that Alyx is on the road to recovery.
