I called for an update around 7pm - they said the pain meds she had originally been given after the surgery were not cutting it, so around 6pm, they had given her the heavy-duty good stuff again, and so she was sleeping when I called.

So apparently our little girl tried to go into ventricular tachycardia last night - abnormal heartbeats and heart beating too fast. They caught it quickly and were able to get the heartrate down, but she still had some abnormal heart rhythms this morning when I spoke to the surgeon. His hypothesis as to why this happened was because of the amount of blood she lost into her broken leg and that she was therefore a bit shocky - it had swollen up a great deal by the time we got her admitted, since the bone literally shattered into at least four pieces.

Dr. Kortney called over to AAVEC when she came into work around noon, and got a bit more of an update for me.... Symbra is getting up with assistance (and was apparently standing in her cage while they were talking) and has now eaten finally. She is bright and alert (and no doubt her ears are flying every which way as she reacts to all the sights and sounds in her nervous way). The incision looks good. They are continuing to give her lidocaine and sotalol IV in order to get the arrhythmia under control, and she is being closely monitored by the cardiac team. She MAY be able to come home tomorrow, but Sunday is more likely, and honestly, if there is any doubt, I'd rather she stayed the extra day (thank goodness for fellow veterinary staff discounts...)

Brian and I will be visiting her this evening during their 8-10pm visiting hours.

They kept having to sedate Pinky after her amputation because she was getting agitated and her heart rate was all bonkers. She came home about 26 hours after she had her surgery to be cared for at home because she would not rest inside of a kennel. Her doctor and I agreed she would likely be more comfortable at home (she is not a shy dog but very much a creature of habit...there were too many things going on that weren't normal for her and that made her very agitated).

Come and see us in the osteo thread...we're all at different stages in the process...Pinky is about to have her 4th chemo treatment (Carboplatin) next Thursday :)

Continued good thoughts for your pretty girl's recovery :hope

When we got there to the ER, the tech advised that it would be stressful for us to visit with her. Her heart rate was 170 at that moment, and the tech said while she thought it would calm when we visited with her, after we left, she feared it would spike. We reluctantly took her advice.

She told us that Symbra is getting up and moving, but not particularly well - she's trying to move too quickly :blush She's apparently not eating again, but with her pain meds every three hours, she is resting more or less comfortably. The surgical team will be in at 8:30 tomorrow morning; the tech said I should call then for an update.

Brian and I decided that come hell or high water, we were going to visit with her tomorrow. He left the sweatshirt he was wearing, for them to put in her cage with her, so hopefully she may relax a little more with a smell from home. I work 8-1 tomorrow, so it will be tomorrow afternoon until we can get over there to see her.

The tech gave us the update in the waiting room - two ladies who were waiting to visit with their dog told us after she had left that they had seen Symbra during the earlier visiting hours today. They said they thought she looked great. Symbra was being taken out for a potty break and they thought she was moving around well. They said she has a nice large crate and looked comfy - she was sitting up and watching everything going on around her (no doubt that was making her nervous, though - lots of noises and whatnot, and no way to escape from it like she would normally do).

I spoke briefly to the surgeon this morning. Her abnormal heart rhythms still have not converted, though I was assured that it WILL happen - could be later today, could be tomorrow. The surgeon also said it was not by his orders that we were advised not to visit last night, and is fine with us visiting this afternoon when I get off work. She is still not eating, but he said he kind of expects that with the arrhythmia making her feel bad. We are welcome to bring whatever food we want to bring and try to get her to eat. He said they would monitor her during our visit, and if her heart starts to get worse, then they will ask us to leave.

I'm so sorry for everything all of you and Symbra have been through. Especially having been thrown into it all with no warning.

I've been thinking of you and hope that she will recover well enough to come home very soon. Some dogs do fine in the hospital, others improve much faster at home than anywhere else. It sounds like home will do Symbra a world of good (and you, too!)
