suffered a pathologic fracture in her right rear femur while I was helping to position her for radiographs of her right rear knee. We just got back from transporting her to the Annapolis ER/Referral Center so that they may give her heavy-duty pain medications overnight and hopefully amputate the leg tomorrow.

Yikes how does that happen from moving a dog? Did she already have bone issues? Or was the handling too rough?

The bone was probably weak.

I was one of the people handling her, so no, not too rough. She was toe-touch lame last night, and still limping this morning and then when I got home from work this afternoon, so I took her back in to work. Dr. Kortney localized the pain to her knee area, not muscle, so we took her right to the surgery suite to do the radiographs. It broke while we were trying to get her to lay down on her side.

I'm so sorry this happened to you also. It happened to our Jamey as they were turning him over for another angle for an X-ray. His leg (right front) was amputated that same afternoon and he lived 27 months post amputation and chemo for osteo. I hope that the same, plus longer time holds for your Symbra. Lots of good thoughts coming your way.

Poor girl. At least she'll get pain meds.

The surgeon called about 30 minutes ago. Other ER cases needing surgery came in last night, and are more urgent, so they will be done first, but Symbra WILL have surgery today; it just won't be until later this afternoon/early evening.

I forgot to mention that I had my vet do the lateral views of the lungs for a met check, and we both agreed no way in hell were we going to try to put her on her back for the VD view - really no way to stabilize her without hurting her more. The laterals looked clear, thus why we took her for surgery versus euthanizing her last night. While we were filling out paperwork at the ER last night, they were able to get enough pain meds on board to do the VD view of her lungs, which also looked clear.

Of course I'll be in contact with Ohio State for the most current chemotherapy protocol, but I will wait until we know she comes out of surgery okay, and also see if the surgeon has any more thoughts once he gets in there and sees everything.
