Tonight at 2 minutes to midnight I watched my very best friend take his last breath. His body had failed him; a stroke, or a seizure, we don't know; but he couldn't walk and he was scared and in pain... And it was time for me to make good on that most important of promises...

*********************************************************************************************

Those who have been around on GT for awhile know the beginnings of the story of Frank... I adopted him as a companion to my first grey, Iberia, who I'd had for about a year. I was not a very experienced owner; and I had a lot to learn. I ended up learning a very hard lesson at the expense of my boys. There was a fight; a bad one. We lost Iberia as a result; and I was torn as to what to do. I thought I'd have to send Frank away; but I couldnt bear the thought of losing both of them. So he stayed and we worked on issues. We learned together; he was exposed to other dogs as often as I could get him out, and over the years his fear aggression subsided and he learned to trust me to keep him safe. I learned to trust him, too. He helped me during my fight for sobriety; he got me out in the big, scary world, walking him a couple of miles several times a week which helped me regain my health. When my 10 year relationship with my daughter's father broke up, he made me feel safe and kept me sane. He was a friend and a constant in my daughter's life; they shared an incredible bond.

Frank was an easy dog to love. He was big; in stature and in heart. He loved to go everywhere with his family. We camped, stayed in hotels, visited family, and he was always with us. Looking thru ur family pictures, there's Frank... He went to an anime convention at the Portland Hilton and stayed with us on the 14th floor. Traveled all over the state of Oregon; taking everything in stride. He won the heart of my fiance, Gene, and learned that not all the men in his Momma's life were jerks  We could not go anywhere without Frank drawing attention; he was a great ambassador for greyhound adoption.

I'd resigned myself that he'd always have to be an only dog; but by the time he was 9, he'd mellowed so much we decided to give a little female a try, and Chelsa came home. He was a perfect gentleman. Then a couple of years later, RubyJewels joined us.

I could go on forever; when you share your heart and home with a dog for almost ten years there are bound to be many, many stories. Frank helped me define myself; he was and will forever be a part of who I am. He made me want to be a better person. And so he may be gone from this earth; but never, ever from my heart.

I love you forever, my sweet boy....
