Intermittent Limping - But Only On Tarmac

Kelly seems to have developed a slight, intermittent limp whenever he walks on tarmac. When he's on grass or in the house he's absolutely fine, and is bouncing around after his toys, scratching his beds up and trotting round the garden as normal. It seems to be his front right paw that he limps on – he's not holding it up and puts his full weight on it when he cocks his back leg to pee, but whenever he walks on tarmac he goes down on it a bit too much. I have prodded and poked his pads, checked between his toes, squeezed his joints, moved his shoulders and ankles and he doesn't react. He's not nibbling at his pads either.

So… I'm not worried, but I am mystified. It's been going on for 2 days now and although it doesn't seem to be any worse, it isn't going away either, so if there's no improvement tomorrow I guess we'll be heading to the vet (sigh). Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Limping specifically on hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt/pavement... usually seems to be corns. It may be too new to see yet, though. Look for any discoloration on the pads of that foot and maybe you can spot it forming.

He does seem to have a pinkish spot on one of the pads on that foot - although it's smooth, and looks like a less pigmented area rather than a hard or raised area. Could this be the start of a corn?

Yup - sounds like a corn to me, too. Same symptoms that started our corn voyage - limping on hard surfaces only. Could also be a slight foreign body in a paw pad, but more probably a corn. When Trixie first started down that road, there was no corn that I could "see" either, but it seemed to pop out fairly quickly after that. Trixie's are an obvious hard, tiny lump that looks grey like the rest of the pad, but it's a different color (usually darker) and is definitely a hard little stone-like thing.
