Guest Mom2Shiloh
Good friend who is not on GT has a greyhound who is quite ill, steadily losing weight and panting.... everything has come back normal EXCEPT his T4 is at 12, which is Very high. Her vet had NO idea what to do about it; she has spoken with Suzanne Stack and Jean Dodds and is trying to reach Dr. Couto. Feel free to post here, p.m. me or email me at mom2harley@verizon.net. I told her I'd see if anyone had any ideas.
greysmom
Sounds like a thyroid tumor or cushings (is that the right disease?). Hope your friend can find an answer soon. Guest LokisMom
I'm sorry. I have seen something similar but only in a grey who was being WAY over-medicated for hypothyroidism. I hope your friend finds an answer (and if you wouldn't mind sharing when she does since it is something we don't see often here) ETA: Prayers and good thoughts for the doggy Edited July 13, 2011 by LokisMom
greyhead
What did Drs. Stack and Dodds say? Quote Mary with Jumper Jack (2/17/11) and angels Shane (PA's Busta Rime, 12/10/02 - 10/14/16) and Spencer (Dutch Laser, 11/25/00 - 3/29/13).
DaisyDoodle
Cushing's is related to hyperactive adrenal functioning, rather than thyroid. Will thyroid values be off with Cushing's? JJNg
Looks like multiple friends are sharing this case on GT. Here's a link to another thread with more information. And also a post made in an existing thread about low thyroid. Hyperthyroidism is very rare in dogs, but not unheard of. In most cases, it's caused by a tumor of the thyroid gland. A small percentage are benign tumors (adenomas), but most are cancerous (adenocarcinomas). Additional testing should focus on trying to determine whether there is a tumor, whether it is benign or malignant, and whether there has been any metastasis to the lungs, lymph nodes, or other organs. Treatment usually involves surgery or radioactive iodine therapy. Oral medication to suppress thyroid hormone production (methimazole) is less successful than the other options, but can be tried if surgery is not something the owners want to pursue, or if the tumor is not operable. Here's a link to a good article about thyroid tumors in dogs as well as cats. Guest Mom2Shiloh
Both Drs. Stack and Dodd said they hadn't seen it before .... re the Cushing's idea, that had occurred to me too but I have no idea if that could cause extra high thyroid values. I don't think so ... thanks for the information and link.. keep it coming (even though I'm going to bed now!) But I will relay both feedback and results back here. Batmom
You wouldn't be likely to see Cushing's disease and hyperthyroidism at the same time, although you could see elevated cortisol levels because of hyperthyroidism. Has your friend considered ultrasound and a fine needle aspirate?
