RobinM
Teddy has had a corn on his front foot for some time. It is causing a lot of pain. He refuses to walk in the therapaws. Picture a person in flippers on dry land- that's my T. He has had the corn hulled several times but still holds his foot up in discomfort. He is walking less than 50% of what he used to walk. So, the time has come to have it surgically removed. I can have it done on this Thursday. It would be 2 weeks before we leave for grapehounds. My vet thinks he will be more comfotable than he is now. Do it now or wait till we get back? AliWest
I would do it now. He will feel so much better with the corn gone.
Guest MnMDogs
Mork's surgical removal had a very long healing time... Longer than his toe amp if you can believe that. Will you need to keep it wrapped and have bandage changes?
RobinM
Yes weekly bandage changes. tbhounds
I would wait-- corn excision takes a long time to heal. It's not uncommon to have sutures in place for 3 weeks-it can be a rough recovery and he may be intially in more pain than he is now. Also, what would you do if a problem should arise while your upstate--ie infection, secondary bandage rubs/sores... Have you tried NeoPaws boots?? brandimom
Tough question to answer. My 10 y.o. just had warts removed from all four feet on 6/22/11 and she is still limping. The pain of a corn has got to be similar to the pain of a wart. I think because my grey now has cellulitis and I know now what I did not know before I would have them done after my vacation. Cellulitis probably brought on because of opening on pad of foot.
Guest jackman
I hope I'm not too late. Surgery, to me, is a last resort and from what I've read, there is a good chance the corns will come back after surgery. I know it's frustrating - nothing seems to work and they are getting worse and growing on other toes. I have been using Murrays cream for a while but it's hard to see Prince still in discomfort so I can't resist hulling or using the dremel - which may be making them worse. Anyway I just found some info about a homeopathic treatment from a Lori in Ireland that takes maybe 4 weeks and is less of a cumbersome treatment than Murrays Cream. I initially found the info here: http://dognotesinc.wordpress.com/2011/02/21/help-my-greyhound-has-corns-on-her-toes/ And today I found more here: http://worldofgrey.com/?p=746 It seems there is no way to order it yet from a website so they are doing it by email and paypal. I think I will go ahead and try it. I've sent an email out and waiting to hear back. If anyone is interested, I will post what happens (in another thread)
inugrey
Unsolicited opinion alert If you are going the surgery route I really would talk about removing the entire toe, especially if it is one of the outside digits... I honestly have not read of a successful surgery while avidly reading all corn posts on GT since 2005. Solicited opinion Go ahead and wait until after Grapehounds. You would be amazed at the funny complications that could develop. rascalsmom
Good luck. I personally have chosen not to have Jack's worst corn removed. Our vet told us "about 50%" of them come back anyway--not good enough odds for me to put him (and us) through that. Have you tried pain meds at all? Jack takes generic rimadyl twice daily for his. Fortunately he's able to avoid hard surfaces most of the time--he sticks to the carpeting and rugs. Quote Phoebe (Belle's Sweetpea) adopted 9/2/13.
