Guest Bean_Scotch
Quick question... What is the difference between Clomicalm and Amitrypatalene in Separation anxiety...and also Valium and Xanex. Also, the dosage...The vet prescribed Clomicalm 75mg twice a day and Xanex. Any help is appreciated!
JJNg
Clomicalm and amitriptyline are both in the same class of drugs - tricyclic antidepressants. Clomicalm has a stronger behavioral effect as it is more serotonin-specific. Amitriptyline has more non-specific actions, with more of an effect on other neurotransmitters, like norepinephrine. Amitriptyline also acts as an antihistamine, so it is sometimes used for itching, especially cases where itching has led to secondary behavioral effects like lick granulomas, over-groomming and self-mutilation. However, the behavioral effects of amitriptyline are so mild that most behaviorists don't use it much anymore as there are many better options. Valium and Xanax are in the class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which are short-acting anti-anxiety meds. They are fairly similar, and certain individuals may do better on one than the other.
