Mysterious Stomach Issues

i’ll do my best to make a long story short in an effort to get some advice or insight. i apologize ahead of time if poop description ends up being graphic. nuri has always had a very sensitive stomach. he was on iams (the ONLY food that didn’t cause the big D), but i found that nature’s domain grain free salmon and sweet potatoes gave the same results with more nutritional value. pretty much any new foods (other than chicken necks and freeze dried duck/beef/chicken parts) will make him get diarrhea for a day. this is usually cured with a day of fasting or sometimes a bit of rice. monday (a week ago today) he had explosive D throughout the day. he didn’t eat anything different, but you never quite know what will throw him off sometimes. i fasted him, stopping the D, but not producing any poop at all, not really proving that it had been cured. i started him on chicken and rice with a bit of kibble on wednesday. thursday turned into a D fest. ugh. i fasted him again on friday, stopping the poop entirely. he started with rice and chicken only on saturday. no poop until yesterday. the little bit of oppo that is coming has continued to be somewhat soft and a bit mucus-y. he’s keeping hydrated, has a great appetite, and is acting like himself with the exception of the explosive days. i’m planning on taking him to the vet tomorrow to check it all out. it seems like it may be food related, but i’m not sure. any insight out there? sound like a bug? ibd?

If the Big D has gone on this long (and especially if there's mucus, which indicates a very irritated GI tract) definitely take him to the vet, and check for parasites as well as bacteria. Explosive D/mucus is not normal and not good for the dog even if he isn't getting dehydrated. Kelly has IBD and his problems started with what we thought was a stomach upset that just went on and on. In the end he turned out to have a horrible worm infestation which has caused permanent damage to his intestines (and caused the IBD), and he now can't eat dog food at-all.

Also, hookworm doesn't always show up on tests, so you'll need to check for them a few times to 'catch' them at the egg-shedding stage, if they're there.

Good luck!

Even if a fecal sample comes up negative, I would deworm with Panacur for 3+ days. It will kill most types of worms and also Giardia. Good luck.
