Itchy Dog

I can't figure out what's going on with Spud.

He doesn't have fleas. It's summer, so it's not dry heat/dry skin.

But there are three spots that he seems to need to scratch often enough that he has broken the skin. And the more he scratches, the more aggraveted the sores get. He scratches under his chin on the right side -- not the left, on a patch on his right shoulder where he has an old scar from last year, and on the top of his head where he got scratched sticking his head in the barberry bush looking for deathwish bunny.

We had a similar problem last summer with a scratch under his chin that he kept opening up. The vet gave him a cortesone (sp?) shot at the site and gave me some ointment to apply. After the visit to the vet, he stopped scratching and the spot healed.

Before I take him to see the vet again I thought someone else might have had the same problem and has found a solution that works. Either the over the counter cortesone stuff doesn't work or I'm not using it correctly.

Spud and I could use some suggestions.

Allergies?

Jeffy gets very itchy in the summer from allergies, the vet said she could give him steroids for it but would rather not unless it gets really bad.

For OTC cortisone cream, I apply a nice dab and distract the dog for a couple minutes so he doesn't lick/rub it off before it has a chance to work. Other things worth trying: Bactine; Genesys spray (from your vet; pricey but works very well).

Might want to first wash the areas gently but well with plain old soap and water. Rinse especially well, then apply your topical.

Good luck!

Max was having a really bad time. Our vet switched his food 2x before we got relief. He is eating Natural Balance Fish & Sweet Potato. I also toss a fish oil capsule in with his kibble in the evening. Things seem to be on the upswing...finally.

If it happens every summer, it's probably allergies. My cocker spaniel used to do the same thing and it started the same week every year. We started giving him benedryl around that time and it solved the problem.

For right now, clean the area once a day with something gentle to prevent secondary infection. Put some cortisone cream on it or even some lidocaine cream. If it gets worse or doesn't get better after a few days, you might need to do a short course of steroids just for a few days.
