Annette
Dixie has been limping on her left foot for quite a while. Since she would be under for the dental, it would be good time for an x-ray. The x-rays were fine, nothing abnormal. The vet was able to (finally) elicit a pain response from Dixie. Her "ring finger" is painful, but nothing can be seen on an x-ray, it all looks normal. Any ideas? We were giving her Deramaxx and that seems to have lost its effectiveness, so now we are giving her metacam on an as needed basis (up to 3 x a day). Batmom
Corn? Ligament injury? Could you identify any incident (a big run in the yard, a fall, etc.) that seemed to set off her problem? Annette
Corn? Ligament injury? Could you identify any incident (a big run in the yard, a fall, etc.) that seemed to set off her problem? No corns. She has been progressively getting worse (we are talking many months), so I don't believe it is related to a particular incident in the yard. I suppose she could have injured herself jumping off the couch? How do you know if there is ligament damage? Is there a positive way to determine if it might be arthritis in her toe/foot? I remember being able to see the arthritis in x-rays for Scarlett. Quote Annette, mom to Banjo (AJN Spider Man) & Casey (kitty), wife to Roy. silverfish
Good news on the x-ray! Ligaments (as I know personally!) can be very painful to press on if they're damaged, and of course, painful to use. And ligaments take a very long time to heal, especially if you don't rest them enough. Arthritic joints can also be painful to touch - my mother used to say it was like having an electric shock. It's probably not much help, but one way to tell if the wrist joint is playing up is to have the dog standing, and fold that foot up as far as it will comfortably go, and just hold it there for half a minute. When you let go, have someone immediately trot her away. If the muscles or ligaments are giving trouble, her limp will be much more pronounced for a few paces.
