kudzu
The ticks are just horrible this year. The Greys have only come in with a few & so far only two tiny attached ticks. The Staghound, who looks like & inherited a coat from her Deerhound mama, is a veritable tick magnet. I've got to do something but we have cats. The Frontline doesn't seem to be working in our area for fleas & an annoying neighbor is harboring a feral cat colony so flea control is now an issue for the first time in many years. The dogs have been flea free as far as I could see but the indoor cats turned up with a couple fleas. Could be a dog brought one in or BF's lunatic cat returned from her Great Escape with stowaways. I've not purchased flea control products in at least 4 years. We've just not needed any. Whatever the reason for the current problems I chose to use Advantage instead of Frontline as my solution. Now all my "Oh we never have problems with fleas & ticks" bravado has crumbled with 3 more deer ticks found on the StagDeerie. I've still got some Frontline spray & can't find an expiry date on it. If I don't find a better, cat safe option for tick control on the dogs then I will use it on her tonight. What other options are there? Just a note. This pup is 3 yo & still suffering from occasional, mild demodex outbreaks. She looks healthy & to outsiders appears vibrant but her immune system just isn't up to snuff. Despite all our testing, including thyroid & ACTH stim, we've found no cause. I do not need her getting a tick disease. She may not be able to fight it off. Guest LadyChester
Try Adams Flea & Tick spray or a Preventic collar. You should be abel to use the Frontline and still add the Preventic collar. We did that with hounds coming into the adoption program with Frontline-resistant ticks. CaliforniaGreys
This is my first experience with ticks so I tried the Frontline Plus but was still seeing ticks so I added the Adams spray. Saw less of them but still a few. All deer ticks here. I read about a product called Triple Sure put out by Natural Wonder out of Arizona. It's an all natural product so I was skeptical but decided to try it. It also doesn't smell like I'm putting weed killer on my dogs. It's been 5 weeks now and not one tick on any of the dogs, so it really does work. sweetdogs
I don't think Frontline expires - that's why you can't find an expiration date. Guest eaglflyt
We use Preventic collars (sighthound safe) and have had no ticks attach this year. I can highly recommend them.
kudzu
Wish we could use Preventic collars routinely but that's not possible with cats in the house. We've used them when vacationing in ticky areas, the GIG. Actually the 4 yr old bottle of Frontline spray is from that trip. It was to offer some protection before the Preventic collars took effect. The collars have to come off when we return home from vacation. Had not thought of Adams. Wonder if it its changed since 2 yes ago when it made me so sick. Could be worth trying, on a weekend when I can stay home sick if needed. (OK that just sounds crazy.) Right now CaliGreys suggested product sounds the most promising. Ya know, if we just got rid of the cats ...
