macoduck
Dog tested positive for hookworms on Tuesday and was given Worm-Out (I think). I was told that was a generic Drontal. Shouldn't a second wormer be given some time later? Can you see hookworms in the stool like you can tapeworms? How high is the chance other dogs in the home could catch the hookworms? Poop is scooped daily/ almost immediately. OwnedBySummer
My understanding is there should be a 2nd dose since hookworms "travel" and that no, you can't see them in the poop. Dunno about the contagious part. Quote Lisa B. Remolacha
When Molly was diagnosed with hooks, vet suggested we test Fletcher (only other dog at the time), but he was "clean" so he didn't get meds. I think most people here have given a second round, but we didn't, and it's been three years, no reoccurance. I don't believe they can be seen. edited to add, she was retested after the first round and came up hook-free. Guest Gweneth06
Hookworms are contagious... Since you're picking up the poop daily/almost immediately the chance of the other dogs getting hookworms is not high.
Guest KsFrets
Cody came to us with hookworms in January, vet had us do one treatment, then another 10 days later, to make sure we got em. All are going through their yearly check ups. Cody and Maggie are clean (yesterday) and Magnus and Lisa go in this coming week.
