Puppy Dynamics; Now Older Dogs Are Peeing In House

Thanks to the many of you that gave me advice on training our 2 new grey pups. Yep, we're crazy- but mostly loving it. This week the new problem is that one of our dogs has decided to start peeing in the house. When we are gone the dogs are confined to a hall, bathroom, bedroom with the pups seperated by a gate and confined to the bathroom. One of the 3 other dogs has decided to pee in hall every afternoon. I suppose this is jealousy, will it stop? Is there anything I can do to discourage it? We're trying to spread the love between all the dogs and give plenty of bathroom opportunity before we leave. I'm not even sure which one it is, but I'm guessing it's the one that tries to eat them when I'm not looking, and now has to wear his muzzle when they are outside together.

On the fun side, these little guys are growing so fast! Amazing how they have gotten so brave in just a week and have no fear to explore the whole yard and race around. My favorite is when they are tired and fall asleep in my arms like a baby. It's that vision I keep in mind when they pee on the rug- lol. Today they are 7 weeks!

Are you leaving water for the older dogs? if so they may be tanking up and peeing because they are ticked off, i would try only giving water when you are around and see if that makes a difference. It could be worse Vegas likes to pee ON the puppies :lol

Also to try to avoid any jelousy issues i always greet my older hounds first then the pups so everyone understands where they belong in the pack and no one gets upset.

You have the pups confined with a baby gate? that wont last very long, trust me they will crawl over it and terrorize your house i would seriously start working on crate training now they are Holy terrors between 4 months to when ever they decide to slow down (my 2 1/2 year old is still crated when im gone).

Has he been checked for a UTI, just in case. We have older greyhounds and place washable incontinence pads down for them just in case. I'd rather wash than mop. If we decide to crate them for some reason they manage to hold it while we are gone. Maybe they sleep sounder in the crate.

Yep- one crawed/climbed over the gate today- amazing, 7 Weeks old!!! I crate them together at night and take them out as needed, but during the day I hesitated to crate for two reasons 1) the first day one got his jaw hung up in the wire- thank God I was there,

and 2) because they can't hold their bladder much yet, I didnt' want them to get used to peeing in the crate. In the bathroom I have pee pads for them. Not sure if I am correct, but if they get used to peeing in the crate I'm afraid they won't try to hold it when the are old enought to do so.

You thoughts? Thank you

I'm keeping an eye on that- but don't think that is the case since it only happens between 3-6 pm each day. While were home bathroom habits are normal- no increased frequency or change of color.

If I remember correctly, these puppies are only 6-7 weeks old...

Puppies can only be expected to "hold it" for 1 hour per month of age. So, these babies need to go out every 2 hours.

Anything else will just be teaching them to pee in the house. Pee pads = Pee in the house.

Here's my advice for the puppies...

Got to one of the big box stores like Home Depot and get a 10x10 piece of vinyl flooring... they'll have remnants rolled up in plastic in a bin.

Put that down and set up an x-pen on top of it. Put fluffy, soft bedding at one end. Lay newspaper down at the other end.

They will learn to pee on the papers and sleep on the beds.

But, seriously, if you want to housetrain these babies, they need to be going outside every 2 hours.

Your other dogs are having issues because the puppies have disrupted everything for them.

If you are going to take on raising baby puppies, you have to be prepared to deal with it... and that means having somebody there a couple of times during the day to take them out.

What onrushpam said. There will still be some accidents, but they really need to be taken out every 1.5-2 hours. If older dogs smell and see pee/poop, the urge is going to strike them, too. Isn't necessarily upset, jealousy, or anything like that. Just, if one does it, it can be hard for the others NOT to do it.

You also want to make sure the pups' location is secure from the older dogs when no one is there to watch.

Best luck!

up and over...they are on schedule! when i read the comment about the lineolum i remembered that i had a huge peice of material, similar to oil cloth but synthetic down under the x-pen which was attached w/ clips to a crate and a wee pad in the corner. we dissasembled our dining room table and stored it and had puppy central for a while.

i don't even attempt housebreaking until the pup has lost all or at least most of it's baby teeth. generally i find that somewhere around 16 weeks this happens, yet i have read that greyhounds can be really slow in loosing those needle teeth. batmom's answer(as usual) sounds like it's right on the money...it's a natural urge smelling the pee, they mark out of instinct.

if you can catch the pup chewing on the crate say "no chew" and give him a marrow bone.they are at prime age for needing lots of things to teeth on, those dental ropes are pretty satisfying as well as the hoofs and marrow bones. felix's canine teeth are worn from that stupid habit and he loves his crate and i can still catch him licking then gnawing on the crate, it's just a bad habbit that some develop.
