Ripped Paw Pad (The One Above Dew Claw)

Hey All,

Looks like Pike slipped while doing zoomies around the yard. The pad above his dew claw is partially ripped off. He does not seem to be in any pain whatsoever, it stopped bleeding quickly, Pike let my DH clean and disinfect it, and we put some ointment on a non-stick sterilized pad, and very lightly wrapped it on. Do you think we need to take him to the vet? Does these things fall off or grow back?

I will post cute bandaged pic shortly.

Thanks,

Rachel

My dogs have done this and I just took care of it much the same way you are. There really isn't much more that a vet would be able to do. I would keep doing what you are doing for a day or so until it begins to heal and isn't bleeding and then take the wraps off at least while he is inside. The part that is torn off will eventually dry up and fall off or you may be able to clip it off at some point.

I agree - A vet wouldn't be able to do much more than that for a torn pad, unless he gave you some antibiotocs. Keep it clean, dry, and well slathered with ointment. Wrap for a day or two and try and keep him quiet(er) so it doesn't start bleeding again.
