Guest nani
Rosie and I were outside yesterday enjoying the day. The weather was perfect, bright sunny day with a nice breeze. After we walked around the yard for a little while we stopped in the shade under a tree. I sat in the grass with Rosie laying on the ground next to me. Well actually she was up against me. I was petting her, and she was loving it. Out of nowhere a fly buzzed in and she snapped at it. She hates flys and bees and will catch them, and even eat them, to teach them a lesson. My hand wasn't close enough to her to be in any danger of being bit BUT I totally see how things could have gone bad.
jetcitywoman
Nahh, that kind of snap wouldn't be anything more than a pinch. Where dogs get in undeserved trouble is when they snap out of self-defense. For example, trying to get a pest kid to stop annoying it, or redirecting aggression to a human from another dog attacking it. sobesmom
"Snapping" isn't biting. I doubt you'd ever get caught by a snap at a fly. I did get started to death by a foster once that was fly crazy. I was in bed watching TV - and the next thing I knew - I had a huge greyhound bound off the floor - onto the bed and snap 2 inches from my nose - after a fly! Scared the heck outta me - and the dog just jumped down and continued pursuit of the evil intruder!

jetcitywoman
Nah, don't you know your own dog? The other day Capri did a doggy version of "gotcher nose" with DH and we both thought it was super cute. She didn't actually bite him, of course, just an affectionate little air snap. And she frequently snaps at my butt, but that's because she knows mom is a prankster. Hide and seek is a favorite game between us, and if we walk out of a room together and she turns around to discover I've disappeared, when she finds me she either jumps for joy or snaps playfully. Or both. Guest lynne893
Actually, an unintended snap can be very painful! Our Swiftie sometimes snaps at a toy I'm holding and about to throw. She gets excited and doesn't mind her manners. She certainly doesn't mean to get my hand, but she's snapping to get the toy and those long hard canines HURT when they make contact with the hand! Be careful!
jetcitywoman
That's true. Ajax occasionally gets our hands when we play with him and his stuffies. We're careful not to encourage that! Guest Shermanator
We called my angel boy Sherman, 'Predator.' The fly's worst nightmare. He had no tolerance and was super fast, he'd get them on his first try. He'd snap so hard, it was pretty loud.
