Really missing Lolita tonight. We said goodbye the day I brought her to the vet this past January.

Lolita was our first greyhound. My kids fell in love with her, and she came home with us in April 2005. She was kind of spooky and shy, but loved snuggling with us on the couch and hanging out in the kids' sandbox. She loved the feel of sand on her paws!

She slowly came out of her shell and never stopped opening up.

She loved taking walks with me, we were walking buds.

She was scared of any other dog that wasn't a grey. Quite an experience to have a big lanky greyhound whimpering and trying to hide behind me because of some little yappy dog confronting her!

Thunderstorms also frightened her. She knew a storm was on the way long before we did.

She loved the cool and even cold weather, which is still surprising to me since she raced her entire career in Florida. She was very excited to see snow each winter, and had the most fun running in our snowy yard.

She found a greyhound sister in our first foster, Carol, who turned into our second greyhound. They were great friends, and could often be found sharing a dog bed, or the couch if the opportunity presented itself.

She was cordial to the cats, and even a bit timid at first. I'll never forget the first time our cat saw Lolita. She was terrified, but didn't need to be.

In Decemeber 2010, Loli began to have trouble on the stairs. She needed encouragement to eat, and the joy of life just seemed to be gone from her. The vet thought it was a corn, but the corn did not seem painful to her when I pressed on it. I gave her pain medicine, but that seemed to cause confusion. We muddled through the holidays the best we could, and then returned to our vet.

He wanted to x ray her pelvis to rule out osteo, and sedated her to do so. The x rays looked fine, so plan B was to do a dental since her teeth needed cleaning badly. When they were almost done, her heart stopped. I can still remember that call as clearly as if it was yesterday. It was such a shock to lose her, but deep down I think something was seriously wrong.

Carol seemed OK at first, but after several days she definitely knew that her friend was gone. And of course my 3 daughters were just crushed. My 9 year old still cries if I mention Lolita.

I feel like I am searching for another greyhound in my life. We had many fosters after Carol, and I wonder if I am supposed to foster again. But my schedule is much different now, and I am not home much. I would also love to adopt, but financially that seems like a bad choice too. Money is very tight these days.

Lolita, I miss you so much. We all do. You were a great dog. I am glad that your suffering is over though.

Good girl, Loli. Love you.

I am sorry about your girl; she must have been very special. Glad you shared her story here on GT. Maybe that feeling of searching is her way of telling you it's time for another?

You and your sweet girl clearly shared a very special bond. How rewarding it is to see the shy ones learn to trust and love, to see them blossom, and to know that you are responsible for that. I know it's doubly hard to lose them when you're not emotionally prepared, and my heart aches for you.

I feel that Lolita is watching over you, and in time, will surely have a paw in sending another Grey to help your heart heal.
