Bloodshot Eyes

My new adoptee Jane has a redness to the whites of her eyes. Her eyes don't seem to be giving her any discomfort and there is no discharge or anything. I will have her in for a 'well dog' check this week and she needs a dental like last year so I will discuss this with my vet anyway. However any feedback from you all would be appreciated.

Not neccesarly will it be what Morty had a few Month back ...Uvitis. It was just in one Eye. We went to a Animal EyeCare Specialist to Annapolis for a very extensive Eyecheckup that made me litterly crinch. With three different Drops we fought it succesfully. It was very frustrating to put the Drops in.

Hope the Vet can asses what it is . :):):)

Can you tell if it's just redness or are there any 'bumps' on the white of the eye as well? Icee had this and it's called Diffuse Episcleritis. Put her on tetracycline, niacinamide and prednisonole drops and in a month, cleared up to where we could scale back the meds. So far, so good.

I don't see any bumps. Just a general redness around the corners of her eyes but pretty noticeable . I'm thinking perhaps an allergy but this is the only thing I'm seeing. No itching or weeping or discomfort. She came to me eating something called Exceed which I am not familiar with (if that means anything).

Andy's eyes were like that and it was allergies. They would get really red during the spring.

Haven't had to use it on any animals, but I grew up with Collyrium Eye Wash. Very gentle, absolutely won't burn. Costs about $5.50 and lasts a long time.

If she's under the age of 5 - I'd have your vet check her eyes for Pannus. Pannus will cause redness to the whites of the eyes but it will also cause a "film like substance" to grow over the iris and pupil. If you take a flashlight and shine it into her eyes for a few seconds - you can see the "film" if she has Pannus. If it is Pannus, you can control/treat it with eye drops but there's no cure for it. If Pannus is left untreated, she can go blind.

Hope this helps.

I don't want to scare you, and this is only an outside chance, but Stella is blind in one eye and has a damaged retina in the other, from either an infection or genetics. It may likely have happened before she retired, but when I asked the vet opthmalogist what the signs would have been, she said redness of the whites of the eyes. No pain, no itching, just redness. Worth a call I think. I had no idea something so major could be caused by something with no trauma and such a minor sign.

my first thought was pannus. bee wiseman has a terrible case of pannus that flares up from time to time (even with regular use of steroid drops). this condition makes her eyes very red.

i love my regular vet but to assess the condition and treat it properly we had to seek out a veterinary ophthalmologist.

I agree with GentleHugs, having just been through exactly what you're describing...you do for sure have to have a vet with a specialty in eyes look at your dog for pannus and a couple of other things... It's very common for our hounds to have an extremely low tear count as well and eye ulcers (holes in the cornea) can result. It's right that a flashlight held at an oblique angle to the eyeball will show some indication, but also you need to have the eye stained, rinsed and looked at under a specialized instrument which shows minute travelling blood cells - it's very subtle and complex. The difference between catching it quick and letting it go is your dog's eyesight...having said all that, I haven't found the diagnostic fee or the bi-weekly followups to be very expensive, and I was worried about the $ aspect... good luck with your pup's eyes.

Well, I have had a lot of experience with this. Ziggy was diagnosed with Pannus soon after we got him. The only medication that helped was Tacrolimus. He has also had uveitis. This is very dangerous also. When all the meds. didn't get rid of that, we had to take him to Ohio State Vet Clinic to see an opthamologist. He has episcleritis. He will have it forever. I put 1 drop in his eye twice a day for the rest of his life. He is worth it!

With all that being said, I would definitely ask the vet about it. My small town vet was pretty good at diagnosing it. We only had to go to OSU because we couldn't get a handle on it. Let us know what you find out.

If she was in a shelter it is possible the chemicals they treated and cleaned with could have easily irritated the eyes.

Hopefully it will clear up being in a home.

A few of my hounds in the past had some redness around the whites of their eyes. Never turned out to be anything so fingers crossed that it's the same for your new girl.

Well I had Jane in for her check up today and the vet says she is healthy in every way. He examined her eyes carefully and did dim the lights and shine a light on them. He feels that she just has some mild allergy that could very well be caused by something in the environment at the kennel. He advised to give it a week or so to clear up on it's own and if it doesn't he might try a low dose of prednisone.
