Guest karma98104 Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 My whippet (7 years old) has developed acne. Now I've seen Acne in foster greys before, in the form of a dark icky patch on tummies, but nothing like this. This is like a big giant pimple you would find on a human teenager. They last for a few weeks then eventually scab over and disappear. It started about 2 years ago with one on his butt, I took him to the vet, afraid it was something serious. They did a biopsy just in case but told me it was just a pimple. He seems to be breaking out more frequently lately- one disappears and 2 new ones pop up. This evening while I was absentmindedly scratching his ear while watching tv I had the misfortune of popping one. It popped just like a human pimple. So gross. Any idea what's causing it or what might stop it? I have changed his food a few times over the last 2 years, my first thought was that it was dietary but I'm not sure what I should be looking for or if that's the problem. I don't bathe him very often, as he's not really ever dirty or smelly. Should I? Quote
LuvAPuppy Posted November 26, 2010 Posted November 26, 2010 Check Thyroid if he hasn't recently. the only hypothyroid symptoms my Dane has was frequent cutaneous staph lesions. It may not be hypothyroid but it's a fairly easy place to start. Quote Angie, Pewter, and Storm-puppy Forever missing Misty-Mousie (9/9/99 - 10/5/15)Fort Wayne, Indiana
Guest cristaron Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 I've had two greys with acne. Our oldest girl started with it when she was 10 years old. Little tiny, pus filled pimples kept popping out on her, all over her body. She had been on thyroid medication for years and had been diagnosed with a pretty serious case of IBD and was on prednisone to control it. She was also on a home cooked diet of turkey, rice and vegetables. Our vet never did figure out what it was. It would come and go. Our male that we have now has the same thing. He's 9 years old and has been on thyroid medication for 6 years now. He's also on phenobarbital and potassium bromide for seizures. His diet is Sensible Choice chicken and rice. His also comes and goes. He can be fine for months and then all of a sudden a couple start popping out. I keep thinking it's dietary too, but both were on a different type of food, except for the rice part of it. It's another one of those mind boggling things that no one can figure out. Sorry, no help from me but I know your frustration. Quote
tbhounds Posted November 27, 2010 Posted November 27, 2010 You might try bathing your pup with pyoban shampoo every couple of weeks. Quote
