June Bug's Torn Achilles

Recommended Posts

Update: 5:30 p.m.

June is just out of surgery. The vet said her tendon was a mess. She explained that the tendon is like string cheese. Three of the "strings" were not attached, but one was. She said she is cautiously optomistic that it will heal properly. June is in intensive care tonight. She should come home tomorrow later in the day, and she goes back in a week.

Can't wait to get my girl home. Carla and Skorch looked at me like I did something wrong when I came home without her this morning.

Thanks everyone for your prayers and good wishes.

----------------------------

Almost three weeks ago June Bug was doing zoomies at the dog park when she yelped and limped back to me. The vet said nothing was broken and felt it was a soft tissue injury. After xrays and a lot of patience, June went to a specialist in Waukesha this morning. She has a torn achilles and will have surgery tomorrow. Recuperation is expected to be six weeks.

Please say a little prayer for my sweet little girl. This is just killing me. We never should have gone to the dog park. I never dreamed this would happen

Don't beat yourself up, she could have done it running anywhere. Summer caught her foreleg on a nail a couple of weeks ago and punctured it, plus ripping off a layer of skin. Who would have thought that a pavilion in a public park would be dangerous? I find, if there's a way, these greyhounds will find it! Hope your pup feels better soon!

My boy Rascal tore Achilles tendons in BOTH back legs, at a "fun run"

we had them repaired -he was in hip high casts for 3 weeks,, felt like 3 years! :) -he recovered well, not perfect, but good enough to have a wonderful life.

He is running Marathons at the bridge now, with 4 perfect legs ~ i miss him sooo much!!!

if you have questions about anything PM me, or email,,

good luck and kisses to your sweet June Bug!

eta: just looked back on my notes, Rascal was in full casts for 3 weeks, but followed up with softer casts for an additional 2 weeks. I made my vet show me how to change the casting wraps, i ordered all the materials online, and did the cast changes myself. the rehab time went really well after all the bandages/casts came off. I was luck enough to have a water-treadmill rehab place close by. we did that for a couple months to get his strength back.

i could go on and on, I should have written a book! email or pm me if you have questions.

:)

June Bug is in my prayers... you too. I know it's awful hard to see your baby go through this, but it could have happened anywhere. We can't wrap them in cotton I reckon (just warm blankies at night).

I just had a phone call from the surgeon. She said that the BUN in June's blood work was high and they want to retest first thing in the morning. I have no idea what that means, but it looks like her kidneys may not be functioning properly or it could just mean that she didn't drink enough water.........I really hope it's the water.

She probably had a wonderful time at the dog park, and there was no way for you to foresee she'd hurt herself like that.

Loads of prayers for tomorrow.

Please make sure the surgeon is comparing greyhound blood work to June's blood work. Greyhounds BUN run high normally, they also have lower platelets and lower t4 levels. Make sure he/she is aware of greyhound specs. Good luck to June and good luck to you in the coming weeks during recovery.

June Bug seems to be doing well. She can get to the door faster than Carla even though she is using only three legs. She came home with purple wrapping on her leg with halloween stickers. I will take a picture.

She sleeps a lot, but I'm sure it's because of the meds. Everything else is functioning normally. She has a bandage change scheduled for Friday.

Thanks for asking.
