Guest PhillyPups
My son had to use clomicalm for his first grey, after using it and weaning her off after a while (I don't remember how long it was) she was a totally different girl. He worked with behavior/obedience training too. She became the perfect greyhound. What you are doing for Bree is done out of love for her and wanting her to be comfortable in her own skin. Nothing wrong with that at all. It is possible if I did not have the numbers I have and a stable pack, that Moe would be where Bree is. She surprised me at GIG - I was worried about her, but she was the little social butterfly there - until she saw the horses. I would suggest getting her used to the feel of a harness now before going. Did you order one yet? There will be enough new to her there, having her used to the harness prior to just takes away one of the new experiences. You and Bree are in my orayers. KF_in_Georgia
People are right about behavior modification and training being a huge help in giving your girl enough confidence to learn to cope with things. What the clomicalm is mostly doing is taking the edge off, letting her relax just enough that you can get through to her with some training and consistency. With Jacey and her separation anxiety, the first day she was home and crated (with only Sam for company), she introduced me to the literal "[can't say that word here]-fit." She peed and pooped in her crate, she rolled in it, she stomped in it, she kicked it out of the crate (where Sam stepped in it and stopped to scratch an itch). I came home from my job as a dog groomer and had to bathe both dogs. After a couple of days--with my trying the DAP diffuser (helps 3 out of 4 dogs, but I own a #4), Benadryl, short work days--I called the vet. He told me I'd tried all the things I was supposed to try, so it was his turn. We started the valium and clomicalm. By day 8, she'd stopped peeing and pooping in the crate. She was still stressed to the point she'd shred the puppy pad I left in the crate, but when I stopped leaving a puppy pad, she had nothing to shred--and she didn't start peeing again. She started the meds on April 26, 2006. She was getting Valium (one or two 10mg tablets, three times a day) and clomipramine (one 50mg capsule, two times a day. She came off the Valium that May; I started slowly taking her off the clomipramine in mid-July. I tapered it off over a period of weeks: 75% of the dosage for a week, 50% of the dosage for two weeks, then 25% of the dosage (a pill every other day) until the last of the bottle was gone. I was ready to step the dosage back up if there'd been any sign of trouble, but it never happened. In that three-month period, she started understanding that I'd leave the house, come back home, and the universe would keep on going. (The vet had said she could have one 50mg capsule of the clomipramine two or three times a day. I never had to go up beyond two pills a day. The vet had said to start with two pills and give it a couple of weeks to build up in her system before I upped the dosage to three pills. But since I saw such a big improvement so quickly, I never felt like she needed that third pill.) Here's hoping you continue to see improvement with Bree.
