Letting Frost Go Today...

This is my first post here and it's a sad one. Frost is my 14-year-old boy, rescued in 2001. He ended his racing career in Corpus Christi and fortunately came into the possession of The Heart of Texas Greyhounds located in San Antonio. My husband and I were not in the market for a dog at all, but while at Pet Smart in Nov. 2001 doing research on a ferret (thank God that didn't work out) ;) we met Frost (Snow Frost) at an adoption Meet N Greet. I fell in love immediately and we took our boy home. He has been the best pet/friend/child I could have ever imagined. He is my confidant and knows all my secrets and fears. We moved to the country about this time last year and Frost didn't adjust well. We didn't have room for "his chair" and so he and his partner in crime, Pup, took over our couches. We didn't have a good staircase leading outside yet and he had difficulty getting up and down the wobbly ones we had. We also didn't have a fenced yard so we had to go out on a leash for all our his "breaks" and even when he just wanted to go see what was going on outside. He hated the outdoors, so fortunately those little pop-outs weren't frequent. Frost is a professional couch potato, loving the inside A/C just like his Mommy.

Over the last few months he has really started showing his age. He has developed a horrible limp which the vet is assuming is osteo. That doesn't keep him on the couch, however, and the constant up and down has really done on number on all his joints. His standing time has lessened quite a bit and his back legs will just shake him right down to the ground if he stands too long. There are other issues a little less appetizing for print, so I'll leave those out. I don't want to watch my baby decline any further. I can't. I don't want to come home to him trapped on the floor or couch with a broken leg or worse.

He's scheduled for 4:45 p.m. CST. Please keep him and me in your prayers. I read on a different thread "Run free without pain". That has been what I've been telling him. Oh, and also there will be rivers of milk and fields of french fries. His two favorites. :)

I love you dearly, my sweet Frost. And since you hate the outdoors so much, I will be bringing you home to stay with me...in the A/C.

Thank you for this site. I don't know how long it might take me to get back here and look at Greyhound photos and funny stories. This is just horrible for me.

Thanks again.

I though I had attached a photo, but I guess I did it wrong. I'm trying again.

No, guess not. What am I doing wrong?

I am so sorry. Letting them go is very hard, but, you are his best friend and are doing what is right for him. Take comfort in knowing that your sweet boy will be at peace and pain free, running once again with the wind.

I am so very sorry that you have to make this decision but know that you gave Frost a wonderful life and he loves you for it. It is never an easy decision no matter their age. We will be thinking of you today.

I'm so sorry that you have to part with your love. Run free, Frost, run fast.

It's never easy making that decision. Godspeed to your boy Frost. I think you will find coming back to the site and looking at pictures can be very therapeutic. At least it was for me. It was very sad, but it helped to know that there are lots of hounds out there getting the same love we give our own. My heart is breaking for you. May you find peace. And everyone that posted here is right...this is a great site full of wonderful, caring people.
