Rebel Will Be Missed

Yesterday the painful decision was made to allow Rebel to cross the bridge. He was 12 years old and had so many things medically wrong that were making his quality of life a real question.. yet he still greeted anyone who approached him, with barks and tail wags. His appetite hadn't diminished, though he had lost at least 20 pounds. I even asked our vet to check him out when I took him to the hospital, to make sure our decision was the right one. (Most older dogs with issues, you really do know when the time is right.) For some reason, this was much harder.

Well, she concurred.. his remaining time would only get more difficult, and it would not be pleasant. The decision made, I helped her lay him down, so she could proceed, and I held his head in my lap. I wished him God speed... and that he should meet up with all those that have preceded him. Especially his favorite love Greys Comanche.

I cried yesterday.. I'm crying today. He was such a special dog.. and yes, he was a kennel dog, but was so loved by us all.

He is buried on our farm, near those he loved. He will be remembered always.

Rebel went sterile shortly after arriving in the USA from Ireland. His only litter (to Comanche) included Paul and Anthony's Donnie and Tippy, who they just formally adopted.

What an incredible dog. That final decision, though made from love, is the most difficult of all. I'm so sorry.

My blog about grief The reality is that you will grieve forever. You will not get over the loss of a loved one; you will learn to live with it. You will rebuild yourself around the loss you have suffered. You will be whole again but you will never be the same. Nor should you be the same, nor would you want to. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross
