What Is This?

Recommended Posts

So for the last four years that I have had Isis she has had this growth thing on her paw pad. I have had it hulled three different times and it continues to come back. A year ago the vet said he wasn't so sure it was a corn and said to just leave it be. It doesn't hurt her, she doesn't even mess with it at all. I have been able to work it off with my finger nails twice. It is hard on the end but sorta "spongy" feeling on the bottom where it is connected. Is it a fungus? Have you ever seen this?

And an obligatory pic of Isis, doing her thing :P

The top part is dead tissue, she doesn't feel it. The "spongy" part near the pad she can feel. But when we hulled it before she did fine. It didn't bleed or anything, she pulled her leg back one time but then it just popped out.

A friend of mine had a wart one time and on the bottom of this it looks like what her wart did when it was removed. Sorta "tentacally?" (I'm trying to think of those things in fish tanks...)

I had found information on toe horns before but nothing that gave any explanations... Thanks :)

It definitely doesn't bother her at all. It just bothers me :lol

Maybe send a PM to Dr. Feeman here on GT. He's the corn expert and greys of his own so he may have some info. I think his name here is FeemanDVM.

That is impressive. Maybe you could have it trimmed back again and try the new corn cream from Murray Avenue Apothecary .... that's what I would try. It does look like it could possibly be snagged when she's playing or running and really cause some pad damage.

Good Luck and don't feel bad, it would bother me, too. I'm so glad it isn't giving her any pain. :)

Huh. One of our adopted hounds had an aberrant nail growth that did bother her - it was a segment of nail that would grow through the pad (perhaps from an old P3 fracture? :dunno ). It was thought initially to be a corn, but rads revealed that the growth began from the bone. She had it removed during a surgery subsequent to a broken leg. Unfortunately she threw a clot or something immediately post-surgery and died, so no idea if it would have continued growing back or what. That being said, it doesn't sound like that's what Isis has and it looks like Aimee found the answer. Looks like nothing serious :)

Augie used to have something like that growing out of his elbow area on his front right leg.

Not that size but smaller and it was some sort of horn thing. Maybe like Aimee posted. Haven't checked out those links.

I used to mess with it all the time and try to sort of pull it out or squeeze it out. Never worked. One day the dang thing just fell off all on it's own.

Odd

Idea one: She is a unicorn trying to go through life incognito.

Idea two: She always wanted to join the circus but refuses to jump through hoops like a circus poodle. After watching the TV specials on Treeman she had a stroke of genius. She could just roach on a chair in a sideshow tent, nap & display her toe while a carny calls out, "Behold, Twigdog!!"

Idea three: Someone on GT had no idea what it was but just wanted to hear herself talk. :blah

A cat of mine used to have that on a bunch of his pads. It was basically excess nail growth in the wrong place. I used to trim them with a nail clipper. His were pretty soft & it never bothered him when I did it. The vet called them horny growths. snort.

My cat has the same thing on all his front pads...I let them be because it's hazardous enough to my life when I have to trim the nails that get stuck in the carpet so I'll leave the ones that don't...haha.

That's like another toenail! LOL Is it live tissue? Or can you just clip it off with toenail clippers?

That's exactly what I thought. I'm interested to see what others think.
