Worried About Andy's Weight Loss...

Andy will be 9 in a few weeks and has always been the picture of health. He does have pretty bad teeth (pretty quickly) and his hips have been in pain. He will eat canned food but not kibble. His poo is okay most of the time but sometimes has the D. We haven't changed his food and he is not on any meds. I assume the vet will run a full blood panel and we are bringing a poo sample also. Here he is before and after:

And as of today:

Well, my before wouldn't work but you can see him in my siggy pic.

Has he always eaten canned food or did he used to eat kibble and changed. He doesn't look that bad to me, I don't see hip bones or ribs or back, it may be the angle of the picture though.

He has always eaten kibble with a bit of canned stirred in. He won't touch the kibble anymore so we are feeding canned to keep food in his tummy. His tummy looks like he is sucking it in and it never looked that way before.

Hope you find out what the problem is.

Going off their food is never a good sign so let's hope your vet can shed some positive light on it. Angel, my last one first got picky on eating kibble and then went totally off it. I hope your vet tests for kidney function too as bad gums can be one of the signs (often you can smell urine/ammonia on the breath).

Thanks for the good thoughts. He is sleeping on my feet right now and cranky. Yes, the vet will be running blood tests and checking for mouth infections. Andy did eat some hambuger just now so he can go to bed with a full tummy.

I hope the cause is quickly found and easily treated.

I love my boy soooooooo much. He worked so hard for years as a therapy dog and I just want him feeling good again. His birthday is in a few weeks and he has to be all better for a BIG party.

Many prayers & good thoughts that Andy's vet appointment will shed light on the problem and that he will be feeling just fine for his big birthday celebration!

Have you had him weighed recently to see whether he has lost a lot of weight? At a Petsmart or something like that? I hope it's nothing serious.

Charlie's Dad, he was weighed a few weeks ago at the vet and his weight was good. She will weigh him tomorrow when he goes.

He cried a lot last night :(

His appt is 11:30 today. I am at work now but Bill, Andy and Molly are picking me up to go to the appt. The mornings aren't too bad for Andy, it gets worse as the day progresses. He did sleep better last night at least.

Just got back from the vet. Andy lost 2 pounds, not too horrible. His teeth are infected so he got antibiotics and he had a lot of blood work done. She gave us some pain meds for him too but might change what he is on when his blood samples are back. He is a riot, just as happy going in as coming out. Such a good boy.

Scary! Hope the abx do the truck, bloodwork is normal and a follow up dental makes it all go away so Andy can have a very happy birthday!

Thanks everyone. He is resting nice and comfy now, I'm so glad I took him. Now I just have to fret a bit about the bloodwork until Monday.
