Guest roselle
Arathorn went peacefully to the Bridge about Noon on Saturday. It was an incredibly difficult decision but I think it was the right one to make. His pain level had gotten pretty high and we felt it was just selfish for us to keep him here with us when we couldn't offer him a good quality of life. He gave me a kiss this morning, "flat on the lips", which I took as a sign that this was the right step. There's a big empty spot on the couch tonight and it's going to be weird not having to fight for a spot in the bed later but I know he's free of pain and running like crazy at the Rainbow Bridge. Thanks for all the support from our friends on Greytalk. HUGS TO YOU, RUN FREE ARATHORN
Guest azlorenz
We went to the GPA Greyhound Gathering today with Tansy and Elly. I underestimated how hard it would be. There were two tri-pawd dogs there. Also, a pup that looked so much like Flash. I HATE this demon. Lois, I am so sorry to hear of Arathorn's passing. My heart breaks with yours tonight. Guest racergirl435
Wow...I am overwhelmed. So much loss in so little time. A piece of my heart breaks every time I hear of another hound's passing. Hugs to everyone. Jen, I find it very comforting to have Seymour's ashes. I think of him so much anyway and it feels like he is still here with us. We speak of him often and I still am surprised at how much my husband misses him. I never knew. He absolutely adores our Ike and Ike so obviously adores him. It really is quite amazing. I knew once we got another hound, it would help him heal from the loss of Seymour.
Charlies_Dad
There has been a lot of sadness in this thread recently and I have been hesitant to post about Charlie as I feel we have been lucky so far while many others haven't. My heart breaks every time I read about another pup lost to this hideous disease. Just a quick update. Charlie is doing well and enjoying life on three legs. He loves being outside sans jacket even in the weather we are having. We still have him on Palladia, Artemisinin and a whole protocol of herbs and so far things are working out. He still has high protein in his urine which is not good and is taking something for that which so far has lowered it however not far enough. The only other thing we have noticed is his skin has become more transparent and his fur on his belly is no more (not that he had much anyways). We are at the point where we are supposed to take our second set of lung x-rays and personally I don't know whether we will. My feeling is, what is the point? If mets are there, they are there, there's not much we can do about it. If they are clear, awesome. Neither will change change what we are doing and will continue to do so I'm thinking why bother? Any opinions/reasons why we should? A quick pic of Charlie hugging his platypus: And for any that are wondering about tripods and whether they can 'get around', here's a link to a posting I did just before Christmas: http://forum.greytalk.com/index.php/topic/266515-thank-you-and-thankful-for/page__p__4796693__hl__charlie__fromsearch__1#entry4796693 Hug your pups everyone. NeylasMom
Lois, I'm so very sorry for your loss. Know that we are all feeling it with you. Shannon, a huge to you. And to you as well Karen for the loss of your friend's pup. Kyle, the only reason I can think to do the x-rays would be if you were going to choose a different treatment if he does have mets. My only thought is at that point you might assume the Palladia is no longer working and choose to try something else (there's the interleukin-L I think it's called that I mentioned to Shannon at some point in here, from Dr. Dressler's book). Or at least you might stop the Palladia if you think that's what's causing the protein in his urine. Not saying you should do any of this, just trying to think of any possible reasons. I'm glad to hear Charlie continues to do well. Please don't hesitate to post updates about him. I remember always feeling the same about Neyla and wondering when people said to post anyway, but now I know for certain having been on both sides that I do take comfort in hearing that other people's pups are doing well. Frankly, there's too little of that right now, so please do post! The thin skin reminds me of my friends' dog - she is having the same issues although hers are more severe. My brain is still fuzzy, but I believe they determined the skin issue might be separate from the kidney issue somehow. Totally brain farting - I'll ask them about it next time we talk in case it might help you. Kyle Hi Kyle, It's always an upper to see a picture of handsome Charlie. I too have been putting off reporting on Gracy. I actually wrote something and then erased it feeling guilty that she is doing so well. It;s so sad that so many of the names familiar to me are at the bridge now. It's like having friends that just keep leaving. I too get very sad and cry when their people have to go through the process of taking them to the bridge. Gracy update: She has been great. Doing well as a tripod, I love to hear her hippidy-hop and she always greats me with her spinning tail and opened mouth smile. She loves giving full on the lips slobbery kisses. I can't bend down to tie my shoes without getting attacked by the licking monster. She is on her 5 carboplaten treatment and the doc. thinks she wont need the 6. She is telling me that the research is showing that there isn't much difference between 4 or 6 tx. of carboplaten. Anyone know about that? Gracy has never been a toy lover. We tried to get her to play but she wasn't in to it. she's happy hanging out with her humans and sister Lulu (mini wiener), and Howard 18 y/o lab mix. My goal is to have her tie that 22 month survival record. Writing this update is very theraputic for me. It gives me hope. I hope it offers hope to newcomers. Kyle who is left from the summer gang, do you know. For everyone out there, not as lucky as Kyle and me. We feel your pain and don't take for granted every good day we have with our hounds. Guest azlorenz
Kyle and Roselle please please post more about your kids!!!! I love hearing about them doing well. Just because things didn't work out so well for Flash doesn't mean that I don't love hearing about Charlie and Gracy. When you don't post it just makes me worry that they aren't doing well. So please, post post and post some more. We all need some good news.

NeylasMom
Question for all of the regulars: Threads on GT are usually closed down by the mods at 50 pages and we are already at 60. I was thinking of starting a new thread and asking the mods to lock this one. I can put a link to this thread in the first post, along with some crucial links like the bonecacnerdogs and COG yahoo groups, as well as the great OSU info Jane always shares to get newcomers started. Basically, make this an ongoing support thread for anyone who is dealing with osteo, which is basically what it's been except that I think some people feel intimidated to come in if they weren't in the original group. Even though I didn't, I just barged right in. Is everyone okay with that? If so, any other suggestions for "crucial" information/links that should go in the first post? FYI, most of the greyhound and oncology vets at OSU are either funded by grants or in a 3 year residency. This creates a fair amount of turnover (a new vet about every 4 to 6 months). If the info on OSU is not going to be able to be updated easily, it would be best just to include the permanent members of Dr. Couto's staff. Let me know and I will send you a message with this info. NeylasMom
The new thread is here. I decided to list off the names of the pups we've lost since this thread started. I can't believe how long the list is especially considering it's only for half of the year. It was a sad process for me going through these 60 pages and listing each one. If you see anyone missing, please let me know so I can add them. Also, there were 4 people who had checked in when their pups were diagnosed but who we haven't heard from in some time. If anyone knows how Santa, Porter, Thor, and Winston are doing, please let us know. Finally, if there's an addition to the short list of pups still fighting, I can add those too. I'll ask the mods to lock this thread. Here's hoping that 2011 brings much fewer people to the new thread and those that join are able to be treated successfully and have many more years with their owners.
