Charlie's Has Bone Cancer

Recommended Posts

He was diagnosed this afternoon...my greatest fear has come true. My beautiful boy. He started limping last night and it wasn't better this morning. DW sent me an e-mail as I am out of the country, my first reaction was to get him x-ray'ed immediately and she was able to get an appointment with the bone specialist at Alta Vista in Ottawa. X-rays have been sent to Dr. Coutu however likely his team will not look at them until sometime tomorrow. We have chosen to fight this battle, he is scheduled for amputation tomorrow and his lungs are clear. He is not even 8, he is healthy, a food hound and strong. I hope he is strong enough to be around for some time to come.

We are devastated.

There IS hope. Just look at Winslow. Hang in there. It sounds like you've caught it and will get going on treatment right away.

Hugs to you - it's hard enough to get this news, but to not be able to hug your boy is tough.

Is it a front leg or a rear leg?

It's his back left leg. I know I have read somewhere that pups do better if it's either front or back but I don't have a choice in the matter. Charlie came home with DW late this afternoon and will be brought back to the vet for 8am tomorrow. At least I get to see him once I land around midnight tonight before he goes in.

From the vet that handled my previous grey's amputation, they carry 60% of their weight on the front legs and 40% on the back.

You may want to "3-leg proof" your house by making sure that slippery floors (and corners) are covered with non-skid rugs. If you have stairs, you may need to have a plan to help your grey navigate them as I found that the vets can be "too optimistic" about how quickly a dog will be able to do them. Some can do them easily but, my grey was not one of them.

Good luck on the surgery.

Losing a rear leg is a lot easier on them from what I understand. He will be up and moving about in no time :nod Thinking good thoughts for your Charlie :)

Oh no ... I am so sorry!

Will you wait to hear from Dr Couto before the amputation is done? I do know that some people have had the dx reversed by him.. slim hope I know. :(

I hope everything goes well. If Sid could talk, he'd tell you that pretty much the only thing he misses about having his right back leg is being able to scratch his chin on that side - but his human servants will do that for him, and if they're not available, the carpet will do!

I second the 'leg-proof' the house. Sid does need his non-slip mats everywhere. And make sure he has plenty of room to turn around in the rooms and hallways because tripods don't do the 'walking backwards' thing - at least Sid doesn't!

Good luck. We're all rooting for Charlie! :goodluck
