Poodle Glucose

Recommended Posts

Just a month ago we were perfect and didn't need to come back for 2 months.

We have not changed a thing but last 2 days his thirsty switch was back on. Now it is off the charts and I am a basket case.

They have upped him to 19 units twice a day and he only weighs 27 pounds. I feel like this is a losing battle. weep.gif

Off to Canine Commissary to look at high fiber foods. That might help a little.

Is there a diabetic dog forum? I can't find one that seems to be current and I feel like I need major help now. They mentioned blindness and kidney failure on the horizon. I just crawled out of the big black hole and losing Poodle might just send me back there. sad1.gif In my heart I don't think we have too long together.

Could it be the container of medicine you are using? Is it old, or a newly opened one? Can you give the next dose from a fresh bottle and see if Poodle has a better response?

Excellent idea - insulin should be kept cold but can often have warmed up & died before you get it.

There's a yahoo group here: diabetespet

Pam, I'm sorry you are having a hard time controlling Poodle's blood sugar. It became harder and harder for us to do it with Quilty. A low-carb raw diet helped a quite a bit.

You may need to try another type of insulin. There are a couple types and some dogs respond better to one versus the other. My memory is really fuzzy...one of those things that the doc explained, but the insulin we had worked so I let all that info leak out of my brain. And some dogs can just be really hard to regulate. If we hadn't had to let Quilty go b/c of another issue, we were really going to have to learn to test her blood at home so we could adjust her insulin better throughout the day. They taught us how to do it, but she passed away before I ordered all the stuff.

you may want to try the non-generic version. Insulin, like thyroid meds, can have a difference generic to name brand.

eta: if you use a human glucose monitor, you'll have to calibrate it with your vets. They do make doggy versions, but they run more expensive than the human versions.

I can't remember, do you test him with a home glucose meter or is this a vet-drawn glucose reading? If you're using a home meter and you've opened new strips, some of the older models of meter have to be coded to the strips or they won't read correctly. Since his thirst increased, this doesn't sound like the case but I wanted to throw it out there and hope it's the problem :)

The vet drew it this morning. Will ask vet in morning about changing insulin.

Pam, I know that Phantom's situation is different than Poodle's since she has juvenile diabetes and it can be really hard to regulate BUT try not to panic. Phanny's glucose can be fine for months and then suddenly for no reason, like 2 weeks ago, she'll either drop really low or be really high. For the last 2 weeks, I've been working on getting her regulated again. It's crazy and somedays I want to just scream because it is so frustrating. BUT then I look at her and she looks at me with her big, innocent eyes and I know that this is just her way of keeping me on my toes so that I don't get too lax with her care!:lol No, seriously, I know that diabetes isn't an easy disease and it can be regulated but you need to just keep an eye on them (as you did when you noticed that he was drinking more). Regulation is never set in stone and you'll need to keep an eye on symptoms and numbers.

I do test her blood at home (by venipuncture) with the iPet glucometer. I didn't pay for the glucometer since someone graciously donated it to her when she was at GAA. However, at EntirelyPets/Amazon it retails for about $50. It looks like 25 strips cost about $10 through the same site. If you go to the website of the companythat makes the iPet there is an instructional video on how to use the meter.

Good luck. My thoughts are with you and Poodle as you work through this new hurdle. Hugs.

Excellent news!

I think I missed a chapter. Which food did you switch him to?
