How Do You Take Their Temperature?

Recommended Posts

ok, I'm embarrassed to admit I've never (had to) take a dog's temp before and have NO idea how. I mean, I do (I know where it goes) but how far in and what is a normal temp? I have a digital thermometer that has like a 1/4 inch metal tip on it, and about maybe 2" before the readout part starts.

Nube has been acting "off" for at least a week now, and his nose is warm and dry all the time too, and I'm worried :( :( It had been really hot here up until yesterday, and I'd hoped that the heat was the cause and he'd go more back to normal with the much cooler weather, but no.

thanks in advance for the help!

I use a digital here, and only insert it 1/2 way on the one I use. I also always lubricate it first and normal temp is 101-102

Rectally. Digital thermometer is easiest. Only needs to go in about 1", no more. Normal is @ 101.

Ditto the above. I use the disposable covers on the thermometer.

Let me just add that I think EVERY dog owner should have at least a basic "home veterinary guide" type book on hand!

The one I have and love is called Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook--gives you all kinds of basic, important info., like normal temp, etc.

Book on Amazon.com

They make one for cats too, fyi!
