Hi all,

A week or so ago I posted in the behavior forum asking for opinions on adding a greyhound to my Treeing Walker Coonhound. I got a lot of great responses, so I decided to go ahead with it. This weekend I got Gus.

He's just over 5 years old. He had quite the racing career under the name Gil's Santo. (Any siblings?) He's a calm guy so far and he likes to follow me wherever I go. He and my Coonhound, Daisy, are getting along very well. In fact, during the whole 3 hour ride home, they both sat/laid in the back of my Corolla and no one growled or snapped, which I consider a minor miracle. He's already found the stuffies, so that's a good sign, I think. (They were my coonhound's, but she never plays with them.)

Just for reference, here's Daisy:

Daisy's very much a scent hound, so now when we walk I've got one with his head up in the air and one with her nose on the ground. It's cute.

Gus has a few bare spots, his bum, one on the front of his neck and of course his chest. I understand the bare spots are normal. I think the one on his neck is from his collar rubbing. He's got a fluffy coat, so I was told he'll probably shed more than most greys. That's ok. I've got a furminator. I was told by the rescue that he could stand to gain some weight, so we'll be working on that next. I don't want him to gain too much, though.

Oh, and just for introductions, I'm Cindy, and I live in NC. I'm a librarian at the local university. As far as hobbies go, I like to read and every once in awhile I do embroidery.

Thanks!

He is stunning! I am curious which group you went through - they can be such a wealth of information. I got one of my greys from GFNC and my daughter just graduated from a NC college! Hope all continues to go well for you and keep us posted! Congratulations! Cindy (too!)

Quite a Memorial Day weekend then!

You might be interested to know that Gus' litter was pretty dang good. In fact, one of his brothers, Gil's Cuero, set the Marathon Track Record at the Orange Park Kennel Club. He also had a couple sisters who were pretty dang good, too - Gil's Navasota and Gil's Lampasas. Those guys always gave our pups a run for their money.

If you're interested, you can find Gus' races here. These are ony the races he had while at Orange Park... but, there are 38 of em for you to watch if you wanna.

Congratulations... he sure is a pretty boy :)

I went through Project Racing Home (My link) in Randleman, NC. They're about 3 hours away. They have a kennel and have around 20 greys on hand most of the time. They seemed like a good match for me.

What a handsome boy!!! Fish oil tablets, the ones you can get at the grocery store, usually help with bald spots.

Congratulations! I'm so glad to went for it! Don't be surprised if all that furry hair doesn't shed off (it's called blowing a coat). That's perfectly normal for greyhounds just off the track. Sounds like things are going well so far! I can just picture Daisy and Gus must look adorable together!

Thanks everyone!

So far the biggest obstacle is walking the two of them together, but I imagine that just needs time to sort itself out. Gus likes to mark, Daisy likes to smell, so it's a bit of a balancing act. Also, Gus has discovered he doesn't like my hardwood floors. He's had a few spills, so he's rightfully cautious. But other than that, sleeping and eating arrangement have just kind of worked themselves out. I did come home to find he'd been lying on my bed after I left for a couple hours yesterday. It cracked me up. And I've seen him get on the couch, too. I don't have any problem with either of those two things, so I find it cute.

He's gorgeous! Glad they're getting on so well... the walking part will adjust! Even with all sighthounds, I find mine have different walking styles. You might want to pick up a few of those runner rugs with the rubber backing. They're machine washable and make life a lot easier for hounds inclined to skid. Most of my dogs don't mind either way, but a couple panic when they skid so we have 'walkways' across the laminate and wood flooring. Look forward to continued stories.
