Part Of Paw Pad Has Come Off

Never had this type of injury. A small section of the paw pad has come off, but is still hanging on, so it covers the open wound but will flap open and expose it. I got underneath and cleaned it, the bleeding was a little persistent. Now it seems to be more oozing than bleeding. Assuming I can get this bleeding to completely stop (if not obviously I have to bring her in to the vet tonight), I'm wondering if I leave the pad there dangling and let it fall off on it's own? In that case, do I wrap up the whole paw w/gauze and vet wrap? Any suggestions/experiences?

paw injuries can be notoriously bad to heal.. I'd prolly get her to the vet asap and see if it can be sutured back in place.

Thanks! We got a vet appt, but unfortunately it's not until the morning. It's stopped bleeding and she's in a sock. Hopefully it will still be fresh enough for a possible stitch or staple in the AM.

This has happened to Roscoe several times. You should be able to treat it on it's own.

 

Make sure it is very clean, apply a first aid ointment, wrap with gauze, put a baby sock on him and lightly tape that on as well. Now keep him off his feet as much as possible. If it's wet outside for potty time you can tie a sandwich bag around it. If he appears to be in pain, you can give him a low dose aspirin.

 

Be prepared for a few days of annoyance. I learned all this the hard way!

 

PS, really if it's just a small section, don't waste your money at the vet. It can heal on its own! (Of course you should go to the vet if it looks infected and all that blah blah blah).

I agree with the above. The only thing I would add is an antibiotic, preferably, Keflex, (1) 500 mg, twice a day for seven to ten days, if you have any. OR, maybe your vet will prescribe for you?

 

If it is a large section, and/or, you cannot get the bleeding to stop, then, yes, most definitely, see the vet. I have healed things like this myself. Good Luck and keep us posted!

 

p.s. ... I might wait on the low dose aspirin, until there is no more bleeding. Aspirin thins the blood.

Wendy partially detached her stopper pad. I cleaned and disinfected it, applied Neosporin, and bandaged it well with a non-stick gauze pad, rolled gauze bandage and Vet wrap. Healed like a dream.

Yup.. Mickey tore multiple pads on her daring daylight breakout a few months back. Triple antibiotic, gause, some nonslip toddler socks and vet wrap for a couple days..

Thanks everyone! It's still oozing slightly. My husband will be home within the hour so we're going to try cleaning it again from square one, putting the antibiotic on it and wrapping it up. It will be much easier with two of us. That should at least do her for the night. I may keep the appt because I want to make sure her incision is healing okay (for those who don't know/remember she had a lump removed from her shoulder about three weeks ago, which was benign) at any rate her skin has gotten darker in that area so may have the vet have a looksie at that, too. Poor girl has been at the vet too much lately.

Athena did this as well a few weeks ago, antibotic cream, keep it clean and wrap it. She healed up just fine.

Oh Sonie! Now what have you done? There is a new bootie out there that works well for to protect pad injuries. The link to purchase at Amazon is below but the local pet stores may carry them. One of our walkers gave us some this past weekend so if you can't find them in a store, think they could be useful and don't want to wait to have them shipped let me know and I can get them from Jen and get them to you. Rocket has torn his stop pads clean off a few times, and shredded it this past Sunday tripping on some wooden stairs. Every time we've cleaned the wound thoroughly (cool water rinse for 3-5 mins) then applied a bit of antibiotic to a telfa/nonstick gauze pad and wrapped everything up in vetwrap. If it's extra 'juicy' I'll add some rolled gauze over the telfa but under the vetwrap to absorb stuff.

 

Our vet just turned us on to a spray called Collasate that really helps speed up healing for these kinds of wounds, it's a plant-derived collagen that promotes tissue regrowth and helps flush out ookies all at the same time. We're currently using it on his shredded stop pad AND where his staples popped on his amputation, and both sites are showing remarkable improvement after just two days! We paid big bucks for it at the clinic, but I've priced it online and you can find it for around $15 for the little 2oz bottle.

When Lewis decided to spend New Years Eve 2008 on the road, by the time I found him the next morning, most of his paw pads were just about gone. He was pretty much in agony. I just would wrap them in a warm wet wash cloth several times a day, apply some Neosporin and kept vet-wrapped baby socks on him. Since he was in the middle of his OS battle, he was already taking Tramadol, Meloxicam and something else I don't remember the name of. The vet prescribed an antibiotic (without a visit..way too traumatic at that point) for him and it took a while but they all healed beautifully.

Ahhhhh aren't you lucky to have people on here just dying to practice veterinary medicine without a license. Glad you clearly care for your dog and are still taking your pup to the vet though. I had a grey get this exact same injury but he ended up busting his deep digital flexor tendon and now has a velociraptor toe and slight arthritis but he's fine now. It required debridement and stitches at the vet and took about a month to close properly and it was 2 months before he could run again. Now he's back to his happy crazy self sprinting laps around my back yard.

 

Well! Aren't we friendly! I'm sorry, but I'm not going to bring my dog to the vet for every little thing that happens. It's a torn pad for crissake. Clean it, bandage it, and keep an eye on it. Did my parents bring me to the doctor every time I fell off my bike and skinned the crap out of my knee? No they did not.

 

And please do not assume that I 'clearly' do not care for my dog because I chose to treat this myself. Roscoe had a severe infection a few weeks back and we spent every day at the vet, e-vet and specialists for a full week to find out what was wrong with him. $1300 to take care of my baby.

Hi guys - sorry there's controversy in this thread - I really appreciate everyone's advise, those who told me to bring her in and those who gave me advice on how to treat at home. I ended up taking a little of everyone's advise, and kept it clean, kept ointment on it and bandaged it last night. With a sock over it because she wouldn't let it be! I also did take her to the vet. I almost cancelled the appt because it in fact looked better this morning. But I wanted an antibiotic and I also wanted her incision from her surgery looked at again, so off we went. The vet really wanted to avoid having to do a stitch or staple, I'm going to guess because she's so skittish and didn't want to have to sedate her. She looked at it for a long time and noted the pad area which had come off is now turning black and hard. It is dying skin. She gave me Granulex V which assists in debridement and getting rid of the bad tissue and debris, and helps healing and growth of new good tissue. She also prescribed an oral antibiotic. I bring her in next week for a quick check to make sure it's healing okay.

 

In some cases it's hard to decide whether or not to "run to the vet" which is why I posted. I've owned greys for twelve years now, and I've learned a lot from experience. There's certain injuries I've seen repeatedly and do know how to treat at home. This wasn't one of them. So thanks everyone again!

I am glad the vet looked at it. That never hurts! :-)) The Granulex is wonderful! I use Trypzme V spray or ointment, and it is basically the same stuff. LOVE IT!

Hey, can I spray the Granulex on a cloth and then rub it into the paw? She hates anything sprayed on her so I tried it this way at lunchtime.

Yep! You can do that! I sometimes use cosmetic puffs (**they are great for a lot of things, including doing teeth!!!***) But, surely, that will work. Trust me, you won't believe how well this stuf works !:-)

This evening my dog has cut off a bit of his paw pad. He jumped into a lake and we suspect he cut it in a rock or glass. It is not hanging there like any of your dogs but the whole piece has actually come off. It doesn’t seem very serious but can this wait until the morning?

This is a very old thread but if you see “spongy” pink new pad, give it time, it will toughen up on it’s own.  No vet visit required.

it  take a week for a paw to heal. stop pads seem to regenerate. if it's not bleeding just let the dog trim the tear if it's tiny and let it heal. if larger just clean and bandage and in 5 days take the bandage off. don't bandage too tight.

My grey has a slight tear on the front left foot, the larger rearmost pad.  the tear is maybe 1/4" x 1/14" on a 90 degrees, ive cleaned it .  I have a bandage on and he seems ok with that.  The first day he limped (which alerted me) but now he walks normally even with the bandage.  My question is does the tear heal itself by "re-joining" or, does the tear part eventually fall off and "new pad" grows underneath ?

No, the tear will not reattach itself.  The loose part will come off either thru wear or you dog nibbling on it.  If your dog will let you, you could try trimming it with some sharp scissors.
